Still some birds on WIHA

A buddy and I went and hunted some walk-in today in Central Kansas. The first field of the morning we saw two roosters, 4 hens, a nice covey of quail and 3 prairie chickens. We hunted another couple hours and didn't see much other than a hen or two. Then we walked the last field just before lunch and managed to get into quite a few pheasants. Our shooting was the greatest today, but we managed to put some birds in the bag in a half day on Central Kansas Walk-in. It was a beautiful day to be out hunting!

We had a group of 9 out around Ness City. 1st WIHA we walked we didn't see a thing. But driving to the next one, we saw one group of about 25 pheasants in the ditch right beside the hiway! We resisted the temptation and didn't come to a screeching halt and start blasting, but behaved as gentlemen hunters and simply marveled at all the birds as we drove on to our next field.

A little further down the road, we passed a weedy draw next to the road with cut milo all around it. Must of been at least 20-30 birds come out of there as we drove on by.

As we pulled up to the field we were going to hunt, a 1/4 section of CRP, we saw about 20 birds flying INTO the field! Gotta say, that doesn't happen every day! We did OK there. In addition to seeing lots of pheasants, we also moved a covey of 25-30 quail!

On to the next field, we again moved 20+ pheasants from that field, managing to get close enough to several to bring them down.

All in all, a great hunt!

Still lots of birds on Public

Shot two limits of birds on Fri/Sat, all on Public walk ins. Went out with just my lab and me and filled out on Friday in 4 shots. Feeling pretty good, Saterday began with a 1 for 6 ratio on the first half dozen roosters with the wind blowing. Finaly ended with my four birds and 8 misses (yikkes). Hurt ego aside, the misses extended my hunting day from a finishing out in the first two fields and being able to work my dog untill a hour before dusk. overall a fantastic trip
