Spring birds

At my cousins yesterday just a few miles from my ranch there was a rooster and 2 hens feeding by His Grain bin.

On my trip last week on US 59 From Montevideo to Marshall to Pipestone I saw as many pheasants as anywhere in SD.

see why i cant bring my-self to go over to SD to go hunt pheasants MNMThunting lol

im very much planing on hunting the MN opener & the next 5-6 days after to try & get on as much pheasants as i can get my young pup into next season i feel i will have a much more quality hunt on my side of the border & save some $$$ as well i will have to deal with less over all hunters & less pressured public lands...

its good to hear people are still seeing pheasants & in good numbers just hope & pray for a mild not cold wet spring & we should be in great shape next season there was a load of hens around or public land spots out on the SD/MN border... my brother even seen some roosters near my home the other day & people dont release pheasant around here... still got a few hanging on!!!

thanks for the report MNMThunting very sad about the norway 'red pine" up in your area ethonol is a B****

Had a nice rooster by the steps today. Saw a bunch again. Bad news is they are all on the road right now and a few are getting windshield time. But lots around. Need some hill tops to thaw to get the off the roads.

There was a lot of snow in the Montevideo area and the pheasants were visible. Seemed like plenty of good cover, don't know about the food supply.
Not far SW on Montevideo the was a good size State WMA good cover, large area of cattails. A large flock (couple hundred) of pheasants were feeding in piles of corn stalks. Like the field had been baled and some of the bales left along the edges of the cover. Probably on purpose by the farmer.

These pheasants will come into Spring in excellent condition.
Just doing some little things once in a while will do pheasants a ton of good.:10sign:

yes mnmthunting i bet the MNDNR pays that farmer or gives benefits to them if they leave some cornn soy bean ETC. for the birds in the winter they will do that on private property ajoining public lands in good pheasant habitat in MN im sure you know all about that... i wish they did that way way more in MN you can tell wear they do it & wear they dont wear not the ground will be bare dirt & turned over well B4 any cold weather hits MN wear they leave food for the birds it will look like a SD PAY TO PLAY private field habitat food water cover & woody loafing areas i found a few great WMAs this season that i cant wait to try again next season had all the above habitat...

i know the WMA you speak of hope they have a mild spring & reproduce well & we will have a pretty good fall pheasant population in many places in the pheasant range as up that way has the most snow on the ground in the pheasant range in MN maybe around alexandria area & south has more???

I came down 29 from Alex, Glenwood Benson.
Lots of good pheasant country. No problem with woody Winter cover all through that area.

SMO, That is a GOOD thing to have a good food source right up close to the cover.

I have a few Oat Hay bales at my place left for the wildlife. This is stuff baled up in big rounds with the grain left in it.

Every bird hunter should pay a farmer to leave a couple bales over Winter by the cover.

I've got to get some pics of how the wildlife use these. No matter how deep the snow gets.
