South Dakota Weekend

Just returned from a very short trip to the Winner area. Met two fellows from Denver that had private land arranged; one fellow has hunted this area for about 16 years.

Snow depth was about 8 - 10 inches with drifts in places, but the weather cooperated as did the birds. We limited on day one but were short on day two, due to limited land to hunt on one of the arranged properties.

We witnessed one flock of about 150? Couldn't get near them - they were gone when we opened the car doors. Most of our birds were harvested from sorghum with a few from the trees.

Looks like my personal season is over for 2015 , am thankful for the several hunting partner's that joined me this year in the hunt: two from Montana and two from Colorado. All great people and excellent hunters.

Looking forward to next season and wish everyone a Merry Christmas and prosperous New Year!

Merry Christmas buddy, going to try and get out a couple more times until hibernation begins. My new pup remains a challenge and am going to get into some training after season closes. Hopefully we have a easy winter for the birds.

Thanks, Patrick. What are the "puppy challenges?" Can't recall how old your friend is and what problems you have...

Stay warm...

merry christmas

hi guys hope you both have a great holiday! it was great going to S . Dak....most birds I have ever seen in over 45 years. WOW... let me know when you are going with Tom if room allows maybe Pat and I can meet you there?

Hey Jim,

Thanks for the message and Merry Christmas to you as well.

First hunt is the weekend after the pheasant opener; second hunt is December 8/9. Will need to verify this sometime next year and confirm with Tom. I'm sure you will be welcome!

Both guns gave me some issues last weekend so I'm hoping for a bit of warm weather - will try both at the range.

Cheers!

She is just over a year old now, not really problems but we need to reinforce commands and work on the retrieve, she found a bird I got today that had buried himself in the snow, I was pretty proud of her. She has had so many barbed wire cuts that the Vet gave me a stapler, I think she has the potential to be my best dog ever, definitely the biggest motor.

Wonder if someone will invent "stay - in - range" command? At five, Max is so intense he continues to stray a bit too far...constant buzzing and he still doesn't get it! Strong prey drive...

The one command he does get - "dead bird." Of all the commands, I think this one, and "come", are the most useful.

Good luck with your puppy - lots of birds and love!!

Cheers.
