snakes?

Do you guys think the cold snap Friday and Saturday night this weekend will drive the snakes underground for good? I have heard that up to this point they were still pretty active. I spent saturday evening of last opening day sitting in the vets office (barbed wire....not snakes....) and don't want to become a regular customer.

Nice vet in Hoisington, by the way. Real nice folks. Met me there after hours and didn't charge me through the nose for it.

It will most likely put them away for a while. First warm day though and they will be back out suning themselves.

Killed a big rattler Saturday when it was about 60 F in the Southwest. He was all coiled up and ready to strike. Found him in my favorite spot. A little worried with my 10yo along but all is well that ends well.

Only kicked out two hens in this private spot and that never happened before. Usually, this is the place I use as a barometer of the bird count in the area and it has not failed me in 11 years. I have NEVER walked this ground and not seen at least a hand full of roosters. So, I don't think the numbers as so good in this part of Kansas. Just saying...

Thought I heard a rattler on Saturday, but did NOT stick around to confirm!
And then when I got back to the truck, someone had grazed this bull snake (I think) with it's tire, so they were definitely out and about this weekend.
Probably looking for their last meal and a warm hole before this cold snap!

My dog got bit this weekend! First time its ever happened to one of my dogs. She was in a small group of trees and gave a couple of quick loud yelps which I knew didnt sound right. I called her over and saw some blood in the snow and found 2 small holes in the back of her left back leg. I kind of panicked and headed straight back to the truck with her. Hindsight says I should have probably went to see if I could have identified the snake to see what I was dealing with but I didnt even think about till I was back to the truck. She didnt act like it was bothering her and I sat there with her for about 30 minutes. I got the bleeding stopped and didnt see any swelling or anything. She just kinda acted like nothing happened...no biggie. It had me all kinds of worried cause I was at least 50 miles from any vet...on a Sunday. Thank goodness it wasnt serious. Thank goodness it wasnt serious. Thank goodness it wasnt serious!!!
Like a dummy I didnt have any benedryl or anything that couldve helped her if it had been venomous. I wont make that mistake again. It has me scrambling for a new first aid kit and some benydryl.

If they would go underground till at least Jan 31st you wouldnt hear me complaining. :D

And how do you know if it was a snake? I find it highly unlikely with the temps we have.

To be 100% honest.... I dont. But Ive seen snake bites before and this had all the sign. It was a few inches up the back leg and the holes were about half an inch or so apart about the size of a #8 pellet. It bled like a son of a gun and scared the heck out of me. But you win, it could have been a stick.

Nonetheless it was an eye opener as to how unprepared I was. It was a blessing in disguise if you ask me.

wrap your dog's head in tin foil and pump a turkey baister full of peanutbutter up his ass; snakes will not bother him. my father taught me this down in Texas.

Well it was 12 degrees here in Dodge this morning. This afternoon it was 43 when I was checking cattle and here lays a large bull snake.
