Snakes & legal shooting time

A couple of questions.

First, I've seen several references to rattlesnakes in some of the earlier posts. I'll be in the Hays area. Is there enough of a threat to bring snake boots/gaiters, or is it a rare occurance to see one in the field?

Second, if I'm interpreting the KS regs correctly, legal shooting starts 1/2 hour before sunrise? I'm used to IA and SD where they give the birds a chance to pick some grit before the onslaught.

Thanks!

snakes, etc

you are right on the kansas time. However, be careful if there is some cloud cover. I've seen a lot of guys walking up to downed birds hoping to see some color (and not) that early in the morning.

I have hunted within 60 miles of hays for 40 years and never seen a r-snake during P season. That being said, there are guys who won't hunt quail on the saline unless it is 30 degrees or colder all day. You get a 60 degree day and get close to the saline river and it could happen but I have my doubts at between high 20s and 50. closer you get to the river the more I would watch it.

For those early and late hunts, I try to put the sun behind me.

As for rattlesnakes, we have killed more this year than I can ever remember and later than too, the last being this past Sunday, November 1st.

Watch for Rattlers in Prairie Dog Towns

If the weather is mild or warmer, avoid walking through prairie dog towns. Rattlers inhabit them in numbers.
