Slight Redemption

Thought I better share with my bird dog loving friends too!!

The last big game tag in my pocket for the season was burning a hole in there, so I needed to get out soon!

Due to weddings and other personal stuff popping up, I really had no plans for a deer hunt at all this year. Then when the leftover DRAW list came out and my buddy at work offered to let me hunt his 35 acres in GMU20 just west of Loveland, I just could not pass on his gracious offer! I quickly snagged up one of the leftover private land doe tags and figured I could easily weekend hunt this tag. And especially since it ran until Jan 31st I figured I had plenty of time to do so.

After failing miserably at elk camp this year, the freezer again was looking kind of bare as it only had one measly pronghorn doe in it! ?and that was already being dwindled down pretty quickly. I figured no time like the present, so I headed up early Sat morn to see if I could catch a lonely momma deer heading for her late morning siesta.

Upon working through the two gates, and making the last turn at the top of the hill, I spied a doe silhouette in the brightening eastern sky just off the road to the side of the truck. I drove on by without giving her a second look and made my way down the last 200yds to the parking spot at his cabin, and left the motor running. With still 15 minutes to shooting light, I waited patiently hoping she stuck around for me until I could see her again.

As shooting light neared, I loaded the rifle and moved the 30yds up the rise next to the cabin where my buddy had created a makeshift ground blind in the junipers. As I raised the binos to try and find her where I had last seen her, I spied a very nice high & wide 3x3 buck bounding off over the hill and out of sight! With her nowhere in sight, I figured she had beaten him over the hill and I had missed my chance.

I then spied around for only a few seconds and found her staring back my way looking for me and what I was up to! With only minutes till I figured I could shoot, I quickly made up a rest and made the gun ready. Slowed my breathing, checked the watch one last time, found her in the scope, and went live fire! From near exactly 200yds away, she made two big lunges and fell less than 10 yds from where I hit her. Alas, I guess I can say I hunted HARD for her! ?well for at least 5-6 seconds!

So at least I have a few more vittles to last me a cold winter! Thanks a million Sal, for the gracious offer to let me hunt your props!
