Skeet Shooting

I'm in the Des Moines/Ankeny area and am looking for a place to go shoot clays that is free. I've searched online all over the place and can't seem to find anywhere. Anybody know of any places in the area to shoot for free?

The free lunch is long gone!

I must share that you won't be able to find a skeet or clays course that is free here in our great state. Like golf, you are paying a fee for the installment and maintenance of the course that you and I get the pleasure of using. Your fees apply to that setup and maintenance.

The only item I can think of that is still free would be air. If a politician or entreprenuer can determine a way to charge for that then it will go by the wayside as well.:)

Dust off your wallet, find a good course with some good people and enjoy your skeet and clays! We all pay to play.:D

I've actually shot clays at a free range over by Coralville before that was a pretty nice place. They had a skeet range as well as a range for hand guns, rifles, shotgun(slugs), etc. I also had a guy send me a PM on this site that said there is a place West of Des Moines that is free, but it's about an hour away, so I was wondering if there was something a little closer to the Des Moines area. The place I went by Coralville wasn't operated by anybody, it was just an open range out in the middle of nowhere. And it's not that I really have a problem spending some money to go shoot, but if I can save the money to spend it on clays and shells I'd much rather do that! :)

I am curious by what you mean by free, no membership or access fee? Or free target?

Free as in a place that I don't have to pay a membership and don't have to pay to use the place I'm shooting. I'm just looking for an area where my and a buddy can go out and shoot some clays. It doesn't have to be a range or anything. Heck, if somebody knows of a field or pasture or something that a farmer or land owner would be willing to let me shoot I'd be ok with that. Like I said before, it's not that I refuse to pay, it would just be nice to spend my money on shells and clays and other things than to pay for somewhere to shoot.

i don't think you will find many opportunities. there is always some "stuff" left behind from shooting, i doubt any landowner is going to want refuse...that is why there are ranges, charging a fee for their facility and maintainence.

I figured that would probably be the case, but since I know of a couple others in the state I thought maybe there would be some around the area.

There are public shooting ranges, that is what I believe you are referring to. There should be some public ranges around DM. Ask at Scheels ,B pro, or Frontier Outfitting.
