Decided that I had done enough snow shoveling on Saturday :) packed up the truck and headed north east on Sunday morning. Hit one WIA field and 6 birds flushed immediately, about 80 yards out. Worked the field and didn't see any more ... lots of tracks in the snow.

Drove around some more and found a big CRP field adjacent to sunflower stubble - found 6 birds, 3 roosters and 3 hens. Bagged 2 roosters.

Moved on to another field thinking that I was going to get my limit ... then chased hens the rest of the day. It was a good day! Once I was on the back roads, I didn't see more than 6 - 8 vehicles the entire day.

The big blue guy and his birds.

Beautiful dog!!! Congrats on the Roosters!!

Thanks guys - Dakota is my buddy. Got him as a rescue at just under 2 years old. Discovered that he was into birds and started training him - my first attempt at training a bird dog, and he has been stellar. One of my hunting and training partners with pedigreed field Vizslas and decades of hunting / dog training experience told me "you may do this the rest of your life and never have another dog as good as Dakota". ... and all along I thought that it was just my superb training.

Awesome photo! It certainly is rewarding when your dog works as trained and bred. That is what I enjoy most about hunting, watching my dog work. Its more about hunting and not killing. Bird hunting isnt much fun without your furry friend. Its amazing to see those natural insticts work and then also see the training you have given the dog match up which usually leads to success in the field.
