Second weekend in Iowa

My second outing/second weekend, and darkest morning of the season (with the time change, tomorrow morning with be brightly lit). I was watching the TV and surfing the net, it was now after 8:00 and it was like Gus knew the time and was really getting annoyed with me. So, I get my boots on and we headed out. The sun was still not up and I knew this would be an issue, but the dog was in GO mode, so we started at about 8:20. The first flushes were into the sunrise, many roosters as distinguished by their cackles, but hard to otherwise identify. I was getting a bit concerned about the path we had picked until a rooster flushed behind me and was identifiable in the early light. It fell on behind a terrace on the report of the shot. I hustled over the terrace and threw my hat where I imagined he would have fallen. I find him DOA 6 feet from the hat. I get back to where I had been, go a few more yards and another flush is happening, one breaks back to my right and can be IDed easily as a rooster, he folded upon the shot again, I get to where I thought he fell and again threw my hat and see the bird just feet away laying lifeless. At this moment, more birds flush and this time one break hard left, out of the path toward the rising sun and offers a nice crossing shot. I take it and he drops, again I hustle over and find him quickly, dead. I am now head back after the second bird, I find my hat and the bird and just taking-in that just a few moments ago I was almost a bit nervous about how this hunt would go...and in the matter a couple minutes it was over or the day. One of, and likely was, my shortest hunt. On the way back to the truck, GUS found a hen and then a rooster that had earlier hunkered down and let everything pass by.
Now I need to put new pads and rotors on my car, I hope this goes as good as my hunt...not likely.
I still suck at photos. The first one, Gus is looking back at where we just came from.

I was just a near perfect morning, the dog work was just hard as for the amount of birds we found ourselves among, but the temps, little wind and my shooting were hard to beat today.

ADDITION: I think we must have had a great hatch/survival for the chicks, as this season I think all six of my birds have been this years hatch, the last couple years, most harvested birds were older (long spurs and tail feathers).

On a "blink twice and you are limited" morning, you would want some other hunters with you, if you had to travel far to get there. It was quite the rush and my legs don't hurt now!

Congratulations on a fine hunt , curious what was the total time from once you left the truck on the hunt and when you came back with your limit ?

Thanks for sharing your hunt !,,

Less than 20 minutes. I started at 20 after and by 8:45 I was heading back to town after gathering/watering the dog, getting a few pics and putting the gear away. Probably the quickest in & out I have ever had. I have shot 3 birds in much quicker succession, but the overall time of the hunt not as short. Most of the last decade I have not hunted too often solo, but still never had my own limit that quick.

It was my day, my auto work went very well also, that is not usually the case.
