Missed opening weekend, something about having to be in Jamaica for my honeymoon, ruined everybody's annual plans......
Got to go out to Great Bend on the second weekend and had the best hunt of our lives. Some typical hunters had to bail (wedding, work, etc), and couldn't get anybody to fill in on a couple days notice, so just myself, my dad, and brother in law made the trip with the 2 German Shorthairs, Cain and Murdock.
Started off slow, only pushed a couple hens out of the first patch. Got to the end of the next patch and a couple birds piled up. Same at the next couple of places. Amazingly was working a CRP patch back to the truck, walking with the wind, the dogs were birdy the whole time, walked in on a point and probably a dozen birds got up and more before making it back to the road. Needed one more bird for the limit, I took one step into a CRP patch after standing by the truck for ten minutes drinking a coke, if one bird got up I bet 60 did, 3/4 were roosters, and all within gun range. Quite the day.
Sunday was even better. Hunted the same fields as the previous days, the birds held tighter, except for the first field of the morning where they were wild as march hares. We all had our limit by noon. Dad finished the day walking into a waterway swampy area full of cattails, one rooster got up, he shot it, and then a dozen more got up, most were roosters.
Saw lots of birds, can't wait till the end of December to get back out.
