Second season set to begin

Well, the 12"of snow we had a couple of weeks ago, is about gone, however the 40's and 50's we had earlier have given way to brisk winds and temps in the teens, but thankfully the fields are pretty much clear for wildlife, except for shady areas that drifted. With the big game seasons closing on sunday, I can devote more time to getting back after the roosters which I am sure my hounds will be happy to hear. Usually after T-day weekend you wont see hardly anyone out hunting. I am feeling like we are in for a pretty standard winter, but we shall see. Happy Thanksgiving everyone! I am off to turkey dinner and football.....

I hope you guys get a somewhat mild winter and nice spring! I'm wanting so bad to come up and hunt Sharptails with my pointers!!

Here's to perfect conditions!

I have done some hunting out there in Dec. There ain't many hunters around. Hard to find another hunter to even visit with. Most all land owners will let you on now that the deer season has ended.
I'm thinking about another trip.:) Just to check things out, get a few flushes, watch the pup work. Maybe get a shot or two.:)

MAN! I'm glad that first batch of heavy snow has melted, that in itself will shorten the Winter and save a lot of pheasants.

I check the weather for Medicine Lake, Fairview, Wolf Point and Malta daily, also the 10 day forecast. Seems like a favorable start to Winter?

Shartails do pretty well even in the tough Winters. Will take off and fly for many miles to find feeding areas. Big Round Hay Bales and hay stacks. Sharptails will gather in the stackyards by the hundreds. Alfalfa leaves, weed seed and waste grain is plentiful.:)

This time of the year with the looooong darkness I prefer the motels.
You guys think? midweek Culbertson or Plentywood will have a vacancy? 5 years ago there would have been NO problem.

Definitely Plentywood

Saw quite a few large flocks of chickens.....very skittish, flying at the 1st sign of vehicle. Saw more Huns that I have seen in late season in a few years. Phez.....well, you just had to be there :10sign::10sign::10sign:

Phezzy, NICE! big birds, like the barn pics. Amazing day for sure. Yeah good looking pups. That's good country for some good hard working Labs isn't it.:)

Thanks for the info, Did You get a chance to check out the MLNWR? I have had the opportunity to get in there a few times right after it opens. :10sign::10sign::10sign:

Never did make it to the Medicine Lake Reserve

In past years, that has been great after it opens.
#1....everybody in our party...forgot their steel...Jeez, old age
#2....when we found birds...the hunting was over pretty fast.

Really enjoy this portion of the season.

My pride and joy of the day was an absolutely brilliant blind retrieve on the first bird of the day.
The length, difficulty of terrain and just the fantastic job that Froid did taking commands and hand signals.....I could've stop my hunt right there and then and had a huge smile on my face for the entire remainder of the season.
Man, when it works....it is so rewarding.

Stayed in Plentywood this past weekend. Lot's of rooms were available....

Yeah, not too many roughnecks stay thru the winter though they will be back in the spring....guess they are not as tough as they think they are...LOL

Strange but marvelous day

So I went back to some of my favorite spots yesterday and....
Because the weather was so nice...the birds weren't anywhere where I had expected them to be.
The week before saw very large groups of birds....yesterday.....really had to put on the miles.

The wonderful part.....my friends young lab, 10 months old...the yellow did an amazing job of trailing and retrieving three roosters.

Dogs are of same father, different mothers.
