Season recap

Expectations were higher for the 2014-15 season than they had been in a few years. Those spring and summer rains gave us some hope for a better season.

And it was a better season than we had in a few years in the south central/central part of the state. We added a retired coach and his son to our party, my friend put the finishing touches on his rookie season at 37 years of age and my buddy's father-in-law with the colostomy and urostomy bags got out with us every time, even shooting one rooster causing him to remark, "It's good to know I can still shoot."

We went out four times this season and we bagged 25 roosters but never shot a quail. We saw one group of five, one group of 3 and one covey of about 20.

It was a good season and there's enough breeding stock out there if the weather cooperates, next year will be even better.

We were very pleased with the number of hens that we saw on our pheasant hunting this year. If the stars align just right; things could get back to truly huntable numbers next year. We had been told this year there were enough birds to chase around, and that is pretty much what there was.

Now quail on the other hand, and maybe we were just blessed with exceptional dogs or all the quail just happened to be on the sections we hunted, but we probably saw more birds this year than we had in the last 10-15 years, it was a very good feeling to know every time we went out we would see no less than 6 coveys of birds. Even better was the fact that I think during the course of the year we only hunted the same place twice, and both times we didn't hurt the coveys on that place.

Glad to here positive things about both species . In parts of the NE I saw more quail than I have seen in 5 years or so , Shot my first limit in a while and took no more than 2 birds per covey ,

Pheasants in NE are always pretty spotty , probably the toughest season I have had in quite a while . Pheasants that we harvested came from quite a ways west .

My season sum-up: lots of effort; little to show for it. Oh well, that's hunting for you. Had some great times anyway. Looking forward to next season and thankful I can still take a big field.
