Found the Pocket
Well after a fairly good season I still had the itch for that one last "Rush of the Flush". After some disappointing news from my boys I found myself with no other choice than to go alone Saturday. I generally have no problem hunting alone, I just felt with the sloughs being unsafe and the weather not looking good either, I knew I had to be careful. So me and the dog headed out @ 5:15 to get to the spot I had calculated to give me the best opportunities in SW MN. We arrived early and found the morning to be beautiful and temperature just right. As I was loading my gun I heard a Rooster calling me just over the hill in the small slough I was going to hit. Everything seemed right for a good day. As we came over the hill and my Golden entered the slough 5 Hens flushed. He kept going and we combed that slough for 45 minutes with no luck. Just as we started to move on I heard that Rooster call out behind some tree's as he flew away laughing. No problem, we heard one up the way calling. We walked down there. Kaoteh got the scent and hit the slough. More Hens maybe 6 or 7 this time. He came out still birdie and took me through some Sumac then into some grass. Up ahead there was the Rooster flying out of gun range. Such a nice day, some flushes not to worry. Walked along a small creek when all of a sudden the dog was gone. As I came over a small hill there he was, he had gone through some ice and was trying to get out but the ice kept breaking. It was a small pocket of water maybe 15 feet across. I had to empty my gun and use the butt to break away the ice until I could reach him and pull him out. Well this just seem to get him fired up like he was on crack and he started hunting like never before. As we walked along he got really birdie. I had been recording the whole morning with my new Gopro Hero3 and thought this is it. He worked for a good five minutes in knee high grass, until finally he nudged that Rooster. Rooster got up right in the sun. I missed. We then went back to the truck and I headed into town for lunch. When I came out, the temperature had dropped 10 degrees and the wind was howling. We hit a few other spots but it was just to nasty out so I headed home early. On the 3 hour drive home I thought it wasn't so bad, I always go into the field with the attitude "Its just a nice walk on a Saturday with my dog".
