Saturday was a good day

The snow was gone, but I continue to be impressed with the number of birds I'm seeing. There's enough that I think I'll make a few more trips.

Saturday was me, my dad, and a 17 year-old friend of the family who had never been pheasant hunting before. His granddad was our host for the opener in western Kansas for 25 years until cancer got him. At the funeral a year and a half ago, the daughter, who's about my age, asked me if I would take her son pheasant hunting. The kid's dad lives out of state. I said I would, but with the depressed bird numbers last year I didn't get it done.

Anyway, this season I made it happen. I wish my own kids could have come, but such is the busy life of today's teenagers.

The morning was foggy and wet with very little wind. Scenting conditions were great and we had several roosters hold for points. The kid had a couple of opportunities, but did not connect. We ended up with two birds in the bag. We knocked down another but failed to recover it despite looking for it extensively. I whiffed on two very makeable shots. My dad whiffed on two due a firing pin issue in one barrel of his o/u. With a little bit of luck, we could have easily had 5 birds.

Nice -- always great to get a kid out hunting. Hopefully he wasn't disappointed. It took a few trips before my guys ever connected, but they remember when it happened.

Glad to hear you guys had a good time. We missed quite a few opportunities for birds in the bag by having the kids flush pointed birds and had them escape unharmed. Its a great experience for adult and kid both and when the connect WOW excitement.

That's good to hear Matto. Hopefully you'll get a few more opportunities to get out this season. Looks like we might have a bit of cold weather coming in. Thanks for the reports guys and good luck out there!

Matto, good for you getting that kid out in the field. Radar, I agree that it is very exciting for us dads when our kids connect on a bird. A few years ago my son, who is now 20, was hunting with me and my dad. We stopped to clean the birds we had already shot. We heard roosters cackling in the field. My son asked if he could try to go get them while we cleaned the birds. He headed off over the hill. Pretty soon we heard two shots and a WOO HOO! He came back holding a rooster with a huge grin on his face. Needless to say I was a proud papa.

I took my 2 nephews hunting Saturday to some WIHA and private ground . Some good dog work points, tracking and flushing .Our shooting has been horrible ( especially mine should have bagged 3 roosters and 1 quail ) . Nephew connected on 1 quail . They also missed a total of 3 roosters . Tuesday took a nephew west to all WIHA . Guess what another horrible day ! We missed on 11 roosters . I could have had my limit right before 11 a.m. All killable shots , I have been hunting since 12 , 51 now . I have killed plenty of pheasants quail and doves in my lifetime . But I am really struggling . Can't wait to get out again this weekend to redeem myself as well as my nephews . Please refrain from to much ribbing , feel bad enough . Good luck to all hunters and Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year !
