Sacramento Airport / UAL and checked firearm

Hi, has anyone here had experience checking in a rifle case at Sacramento Airport and/or with United Airlines.

I just spent 15 minutes on the phone with them and they concluded that a rifle case in excess of the 62 linear inches (length+width+depth) would be charged $175.

It's been a few years since I went to my family's place (South Dakota) for pheasant hunting, and I'd like to go, but jeez $175+the cost of a ticket is steep.

In the past (pre baggage charging mess of the airlines) I was able to use the rifle case as a piece of checked luggage. I am Ok to pay the $15 to check it, but....

Thanks in advance.

I flew about a year and a half ago on United with both of my shotguns. They were in the approved hard case and had no problem what so ever. It was actually easier going through DIA (Denver Intl) with them then without them. I don't actually remember what the charge was, but I know it wasn't that!!! I'm guessing it was the $25.

Hope this helps!
