S.W Kansas Rattlesnakes a concern in December ?

I'll be much further to the Southwest (Ulysses area ) than ever before in mid December. Are the snakes a concern I need worry about at that point?

My labs have never been around them so it does worry me a bit.

Thanks for your thoughts on the matter.

I've never seen a rattlesnake (or any snake for that matter) in Kansas in December. Unless it is 70 degrees when you come, I don't think you have anything to worry about. I've never hunted that far SW, but regardless of location, I think temperatures dictates whether they'll be out or not. Good luck!

Rattlers Live in Prairie Dog Towns

If the weather is mild or warmer, don't walk through any prairie dog towns. Rattlers live in them in numbers.

Only rattler I have ever run across in SW/SC Kansas during a December hunt was sunning in the road. Have never had one in the field during a December hunt; these past few years in November @ least one a day.

I've been hunting out in Ulysses for the past 10 years and I've ran into one rattlesnake and it was opening day a few years back when it was 75 degrees. You shouldn't have anything to worry about in mid-December. My father in-law who farms out there said he hadn't seen very many around this year.

It's probably rare, but it happens. I've had two dogs bit after December 1 in Kansas. One was bit on Dec 15 and the other on Jan 2 (different years). This happened out of the grasslands in Morton County.

Be careful and best of luck.

Around my area I have killed more than usual, especially the last thirty days. I don't know why, but they seemed to have had a population explosion around here this year.

My son killed one 2 yrs ago west of Liberal. All coiled up and ready to strike. He met a deserving end. We have been giving our dogs the vaccine hoping it works. Also tried to snake break some with the electric collar. Won't help us much so we wear chaps and try to watch out.
