Rooster Spurs

Last monday my dad and I were hunting pheasants. I shot one that was a two or three year old bird. It has long spurs and it looked like a cap was stuck on the end of them. My dad and I have never seen this before. Just wondering if anyone has seen this before and might know what causes it?

You really did get Yourself an Old Warrior.

I'm just going to guess scar tissue? Maybe froze tips during some very cold weather? then some new growth.

This is from the "1st year" spur. Usually an adult one year old rooster has a wide, blunt spur (as you know). As the bird get's older it becomes/grows slender and pointed. The old wide, blunt spur is supposed to be gone at that point.

This bird has a piece of his old spur still hanging on to the "new" spur growth.:)
