With the rain and snow forecast for this week how bad do the roads get, I'm guessing I need to switch from my rental 2wd suv to my 4wd pickup at minimum. Will the cold temperature keep the roads froze.

it's been really warm up until 48 hours ago, ground should still be warm, some snow will melt, with enough some will stick to everything but the highways, side roads without gravel will be muddy, depends how much they get. doubt dirt or gravel roads will freeze, at least not very hard.

Depends on where you're at. Later this week and into next week (in the northern part of the state) we are looking at highs in the 20's and lows in the teens. The roads will be pretty firm. The next few days, however, it will be wet and above freezing during the day, which = sloppy mess.

Personally, I would go with the 4wd, even if the weather forecast was better. Minimum maintenance roads, roads along sloughs, etc., can all call for 4wd at times.

Doing a lot road hunting right now. Everything is so dry that the 1-2 inches of snow today in East Central was melted and back to dry on the dirt and gravel roads with 33-34 degrees and light winds. Nothing is frozen yet as the days have been above freezing. All the section line roads and cattails sloughs are bone dry and 100% passable to drive and walk. We never considered going out of 2WD. Deeper snow might leave a muddy top when melted but you wont be sinking in anywhere or sliding on gravel any time soon due to dry conditions.

3 in of wet snow turned the roads slick. Oil roads were a white out of slush. Gravel was barely passable in 4x2. Needed 4x4 to get down any section line or travel gravel in any comfort.
