Rattlesnake Vaccine -Bad Reaction

So my 3 year old GSP got his rattlesnake vaccine a few weeks ago. A small lump developed, which I hear is normal, but eventually became the size of a golf ball.

Took him to the vet today, they tested the spot and determined it was infected. Gave me antibiotics to give him for the next two weeks. Said if it does not go away they will have to operate. I am thinking a switching vets after they asked if I wanted the second rattlesnake booster today....he has never had a lump from any other vaccine. Am I overreacting? Has this happened to anyone's dog?

I had the vaccine administered to my two hounds, german wirehair pointer and large munsterlander back in july then booster in august, both did fine with it, my vet was very positive about the vaccine. Was the lump caused by the vaccine or by dirty needle?

I've heard about dogs reacting to vaccines in a similar manner before. My own developed a bump like you describe after his rabbies vaccine. It eventually went down (a couple weeks or more, if I remember correctly). Definitely was scary for a little while, as it was in a spot that was close to where he was bit/had scar tissue. Thought it may be related, but I don't think it was.

I'm willing to bet it'll go down without issue.

Keep us updated.

This may be stupid question but here it is anyway.. When you say rattlesnake vaccine you mean something administered before being bitten?

I'm starting to think it was a dirty needle. Unbelievable! It was a vaccine to help in case of a rattlesnake bite. Supposed to give them more time in case they get bit.

THis shot is well worth the price and works well, in Colorado were the vets are outragous in price compared to other states , the vaccine cost well under 100 bucks,
If your dog gets bit good by a rattlesnake on a weekend it could cost you 1200 to 1500 bucks......

Gsp sorry to hear about the issue with your dog. I hope everything turns out fine and surgery is not needed. I dont think your overreacting at all. I would feel the same way if Cooper had this happen to him.
