quail

Doug,

I finally got some insight that I could respond to your question with. Nice coveys, and several of them are being spotted in Lyon and Morris counties. I know this isn't pheasant range, but at least we know the quail have done well somewhere. I wouldn't waste my time in the N end of Wabaunsee county.....the quail just aren't here this year.

Additionally, I've spoke to guys in 2 different parts of the state. One lives out past Hays and said he went for a drive the other night and saw 4 coveys of quail but no pheasants:eek: The pheasants must have been taking the evening off b/c there should be a bunch more pheasants than quail in the area he's referring to.

Finally, most of you know where I hunt and you know we had a great year (relatively) for quail out there last season. I'm still hearing nothing but negative things about the pheasants, but it sound like the quail are comparable to last season.

Hope this helps! I'll give you all the information I can when I return from my dove trip in mid-September.

we have alot of pheasants just to much standing crops to get an accurate count i went out just about sunrise thismorning and saw quiet a few of them and herd 3 times more than i saw things are looking really good

In Northeast kansas I was running into 4-5 coveys a day on average last season but havent seen a covey up in that area yet! looks like ill be lucky to find 1-2 coveys a day up there this season! hopefully theyre just hiding really well this year fingers crossed. That winter was brutal in NE kansas and werent finding any birds towards the end of the season as well!

the reports from some of the farmers is if you have seen quail here before and arent seeing them now go look at the irrigation stuff its crawling with pheasant and quail they are all there i suppose since we are so dry now

This is really good to know, especially early season when it might still be hot and dry! Thanks Gove County!

i know this is 99% pheasants on here but my favotite bird is quail,i hunted them for 20 years before i ever went pheasant hunting. mostly quail were all over the place, but now if i get a chance to hunt pheasant i am gone:thumbsup:

coming late to the party, and not for out west, but yesterday I saw 3 different coveys on the road (stopped and worked the dog on two of them), would say they were 1/2 to 2/3 grown. This wasn't in Kansas, but a mile off the Kansas state line in southwest Missouri.

so, whats the real scoop on hunting the standing milo or corn crops on WIHA? Is it legal? or is it fround upon? Obviously that is where the birds are hiding.

If it is enrolled, the signs are out, and the map says you're good to go (some are Sept 1??, some are Nov 1??), then you legally can hunt it.

I've never came across one that still had standing crops, so not sure if I would or wouldn't. One example, is how is Joe Public supposed to know whether the farmer intends on still harvesting some milo that obviously going to have questionable yield?

Please guys, do us all a favor and stay out of the uncut fields. There was a pretty big shnitstorm a couple years back b/c of people walking through uncut milo everywhere.

Thanks!

kansasbritt is right, stay out of it, out of respect to the farmer. Even if you do hunt it, good luck getting the birds to fly, they know it's good cover as much as you know its good cover.

When ever in doubt if you can or can not hunt somewhere, then you probaly shouldnt

Happy hunting

They put these signs up where we were hunting:
