Public Wildlife Areas?

Guys was just looking at KDWPT website and noticed how many wildllife areas there are. I now when I lived in Kansas I hunted the Hillsdale Lake area alot because it was close to home. Even spent a day there last year for old time sake. I have some family that hunts Glen Elder every year, I don't go because I don't hunt in groups. I know Perry has decent quail hunting or did ten years ago. Have heard more than once that Cheyenne Bottoms has decent pheasant hunting. I hunt mostly private land and WIHA but was wondering if there are birds in some of the wetland areas and other wildlife areas? Not looking for specifics just thinking.

This year is going to be a tough year pretty much where ever you go.

The public areas do hold some birds early in the year but can be brutally tough until the masses head back to their couches for the winter.

At first glance it appears there are a ton of wildlife areas in the state. Which there are quite a few. However, most are small and when you look at habitat on them which would support upland birds they get even smaller. But the state has to manage them for a variety of activities so there is a little bit of everything for everybody.

I used to hunt Perry all the time and always had good luck but that was over 14 years ago when I did not have any private land to hunt on. I have also hunted Wilson and Glen Elder and did good there also. When hunting public land you have to try to not hunt it the same way as other people and try to get to areas were others would not hunt. The thickest nasty stuff you can find the furthest areas from the nearest parking lot. At Wilson I would walk 2 miles along the bank of the lake to get to 2 good fields and they always hold birds and they still do as I hunt there every year. If you hunt smart and do your homework you will find birds.

In years past I have seen large pheasant numbers at Glen Elder. It has extensive habitat on both the north and south sides.
