Prairie Chickens & Sharptails

Have you fellas been seeing good numbers this year and how has the hunting been. These two birds are on my list to harvest. I am assuming that they are great table fair as well.

Based on my experience eating (choking down) prarie chickens, your assumption that they taste good is incorrect. As with anything, I'm sure there is a way to cook them to make em' better. I've never liked them though. The E side of Region 1 should yield some chickens for you if you put in the work.

I lived in SoDak for a couple of years and did alot of Sharptail hunting near Wall..I did/ do not like the taste of Sharptail grouse..Ironically there was an elderly lady whom I worked with who loved it!..She wound up getting all of my grouse that I bagged.

BTW unlike most game birds (phez, quail) sharptail grouse breast meat is dark like a duck..If you are wanting a bird to mount wait until at least mid October..the birds I killed in early September (SoDak opener) did not have full plumage yet including the "feathered legs"..If you need anymore tips on sharpies let me know..

The best description on how to cook a PC is to stake it to a board and put it in the oven for 1 hr. Then take it out of the oven and throw the PC away and eat the board. I tried to eat a PC once and have never tried again.

Little bit of sharptail I've eaten could have been easily mistaken for venison. I'd go as far to say most people couldn't tell them apart when they were eating it.

New at posting to the board, but have lurked a while. Thought that I should weigh in on this one. Me and my enitre family find both chickens, and sharptail outstanding table fare. Yes it depends on how you cook it. If one does not intend to eat what they shoot, then....... If anybody needs good recipies for these birds let me know. Oh by the way they also make excellent jerky.

Welcome to UPH, Hope to see you here often. Tell us about your dog and stuff we'd like ti get to know you.......Bob

I have never shot a chicken. But the Sharptails are dark meat. I shot a lot of in ND. I never really cared that much for them.......Bob
