Posted Walk-in Areas

Hunted the Holyoke area on Saturday. We saw a few birds..it is tough going out there. We found some great areas with great cover next to some crops tat were clearly marked on the late season access walk in map. However these areas had fresh POSTED signs. We spoke to a local guy who claimed that the land had been sold a few days ago and that it was now private.

I honestly believe that he was full of it. It clearly states in the WIA book that the DOW will post signs that the area is no longer available for hunting. I honestly believe that it is a bunch of locals that threw up some posted signs top chase the Front Range hunters away.

Was thinking of calling DOW today to verify is this land really is private.

What the local said sounds plausible but why not contact the CDW and report the matter.

colorado is holyoak...

ive seen the same thing in KS there was WIHA signs but posted signs just above or below the WIHA sign it was a spring turkey hunting only WIHA so we figured it was for the deer hunters so we hunted it guy drove by & waved as we walked in i wanted to talk to him but he just kept rolling down the road...

I hope you talked to the local DWM out there. The land is private but enrolled and if land was for sale there better have been an agreement between the DOW and the Owner. I am guessing it was an attempt to keep you out.

i bet you got took, for years many ranchers in colorado would put of private signs on public land so as to keep it for themselves. the state stepped in and increased the fines for doing so and now don't hear much about it.

cheers

There was a section and a half East of here that the same thing happened last season. It sold about this time last year and all the signs got replaced. It was a shame for those of us who chase prairie chickens. I had been hunting there for years and knew it well... :(

Anyway, it does happen. Not saying that's what happened in your case, but it does happen. This was in Kansas...

Also, I'm just speculating that the value of the WIHA contract would be insignificant if the sale price was right.

Kinda interesting. I ran into the same thing last weekend in Yuma county. I didn't think to contact the DOW... Next time I will.
