Yep, know the seasons not over but dont have the cash or time to head to S.D. this year. Need to take hunters safety with my son also.
Anyway, i hunt S.E.Wisconsin, have a house on Whitewater Lake there but need to take that "one" trip that stands out. Ill tell my wife thats what i want when i turn 40 in March.
I want to hunt next december so i could use my 5 days next year and the other 5 days the following years. Maybe more bunched up in winter.
Here is where it gets difficult: Ill only have two hunters in my group. Me and my son who will turn 12 and my youngest who will be 8 who wont hunt but will join the trip. Also our two year old black lab will be with us. Dont mean to brag but that dog is scary good.
I cant afford $700.00 a day even with the promotion i get Jan.1st. All im looking for is some decent land with a couple of birds and a place to stay with a kitchen. I make a good bacon wrapped pheasant!
We will be driving from Chicago, ill be taking the boys out of school for a week as long as their grades are up to my standards.
The kicker to this is all will be chronicled and incorporated into a book that im going to start writting January 1st about the year in the life of a normal guy raising a family. If done right and with help from my former english professor, it might get published
I know UGUIDE has some good deals as do other places. Just need some thoughts.

What he said. Oh, and don't tell anyone you are from Chi-Town.

After spending 30-40 days out there this fall, I can tell you one thing, there is nothing easy about a wild bird hunt at the time of year you are planning.

Where I was hunting, there was no shortage of birds, but getting them cornered/pinched is no easy task.

I filled on Thursday, but hunted from 10 till 4 to do it, all in 320 acres east river.

I didnt hunt birds on Friday.

Saturday I went west river, and again, I filled, but it took the better part of the hunting day to get it done.

The birds that are left, are old, and make Houdini look like an amateur.

Later yesterday, I moved 450 birds out of a 160 sunflower field into a grassland corner about the size of a 1/4 section irrigation pivot. I took my old dog into there, and was able to move less than a dozen birds. The rest just ran across the property line into the next quarter. It was dark when I got back to the truck and field dressed my birds, but I would guess there was just as many birds in the adjoining quarter section.

One thing you do have going for you late season, is the ability to knock on doors and ask for permission. You might have a chance that time of the year.

Thanks for the responses so far guys, even the one about telling them im from Chicago. No shame living there. Except the Bears suck!
I got a response from UGUIDE, groups of 4 minimum, looking elsewhere.
As far as late season, maybe December is too late season?

If you want the license to carry 5 days over to 2013, you cannot buy the 2012 until Dec. 15th 2012

Best way we get birds here this time of year and in smaller groups is surround small sloughs and rush them. This time of year just about anyone will let you hunt so invest in a plot map and phone book so you can get names and numbers of land owners. The traditional line up in a group and drive doesn't work well unless you have around 15 or more guys, though it does work (just got back a few hours ago from a hunt with 15 guys and limited in 3hrs:) ).
