Place to stay near Cawker City.

I'm in the early stages of planning a trip to Cawker City area. I'll be driving an RV, but I'll need a place to park and some sort of a cabin for a few extra guys meeting us there.

Any advice would be great. Planning on trying the public land, but if anyone has any suggestions on a pay-per-day lease or trespass fee I would be thrilled.

Thanks!

I think there are RV hookups in a city park on the south side of main (US 24). Also, Glen Elder Reservoir which is right there must have some hookups. Go to the KDWP website for info.

Brit,
Call Sharon at Lakeside Lodge in Cawker City. 785-781-4719 Good people!
They have about ten or so trailers and big doublewides set up perfectly for the hunter. They also have hook ups for your rv right next to some of the trailers.

I've stayed there for years. Two minutes from hunting and her husband is a guide if you want to go that route.

Good luck.

Thanks a bunch! I'll give them a call and see what they have open. Do you normally hunt the public land? We're planning to do a bit of both. We are hoping to hunt a few days on public and a few days on private.

Thanks again for the info. If you have any advice, I'm pretty ignorant about kansas hunting.

DF,
Glad to help.
I've been hunting Kansas for about fifteen years and think the walk in program is fantastic.

My first question would be to ask what time of year you will likely be coming out. If your in Cawker City for the weekend opener be prepared for a lot of folks.
The good new is that there is so much public land within 30 miles of Cawker that you will not have a problem finding a place to hunt but virgin ground will be almost non existent.

I highly recommend hunting the week following the opener or even two. Still plenty of birds and you lose 2/3 of the folks after the opening weekend.

I also love late season hunting. It's very hard and requires a lot of patience but is like trophy big game hunting for smart older adversaries.

If you do not have a walk in Atlas get one from the state.
How are you set for dogs?

I'm glad to answer any questions you have to the best of my abilities.

Thanks for the reply! That is very helpful. Our plan is to hunt the week after the opener. I've heard from several people that after the opener we loose a lot of the pressure.

We will have several dogs. I've got a couple of Wiems and a buddy of mine has a couple of setters. I think we are OK. I will get an atlas from the state.

As I said, we are driving an RV from NC. We were planning on renting a truck somewhere along the way. Do think we need a 4wd?

Thanks again for your help. We're quite excited. Over the years we've hunted several different states, but keep loosing our contacts. I'm just not thrilled with the idea of paying huge amounts of money to hunt pen raised birds. I like walking and working for the birds.

Take care!
Dave

Your plans sound good!

Regarding 4x4. I have always had a 4x4 vehicle out there and it is certainly my preference. BUT !
30% of the public acreage is easily accessible in all but the worst weather without a 4x4. 70% of the acreage is easy to get to with non 4x4 unless there is moisture on the roads via snow/rain.
If there is ANY, 1/4" or more of moisture down it is what we call "Gumbo Hell"
The gravel and dirt mix roads which is almost everything non paved out there pack the tread of even the most hard core off road 4x4 tread and make the roads almost impassable. Take it from someone who's learned the hard way.
At this point a 4x4 is useless. The big trap is a frozen road in the morning that you don't realize is muddy until it thaws at noon and your .....well screwed.

I think you will be amazed with the non pay acreage you'll find.
I gave up on hunting S.E Nebraska back in the mid 80's for the same reasons you described.

I can second that last post! Consider a 4X4 like insurance. If you don't need it fine, but if you need it and don't have it you can through a wrench in your trip wasting a day trying to get unstuck or paying for a tow. Good luck, I hope you enjoy all our state has to offer.
