pigeons for training a pup

Rice farms on hwy 142 west of Bong a couple miles has live quail, chuckers, and pheasants for training.

Rice is great. Once you meet him and walk through the process of pick up it's all self-serve.

If you insist on pigeons craigslist is your best bet.

Ya down the road I will get some game birds. I'm not ready to start shooting over the top of the pup at this point, just wanted to get her on some pigeons in the mean time.

I'd suggest quail to start, even if you don't want to shoot them. Maybe it's just because I live in the city (so pigeon scent is everywhere), but my last dog could give two hoots about pigeons, but went wild for quail scent. Just my 2 cents. That said, I got my pigeons last time with a fishing net and a headlamp under the overpass near my house. Likely illegal, so I was...... very discrete about it! lol!

Ya the only reason I am thinking pigeon vs game bird to begin with is I've had a few training lessons with the pooch with pigeons and she loves them. Plus they are much more hardly birds and can take the abuse better. Once we have the pointing thing down and she's not gun shy I will make the switch to quail, chukkers and pheasants.

Myself and everyone I know start pups on pigeons until gun is done and they are well on the way. I have them done with steady to flush wing and shot all on pigeons. It is safe, and full proof for building confidence. You can run the dog on or throw some retrieves with some hen pheasants as well to get them used to them. Pigeons are much cheaper, and the bird of choice for every pro and good novice trainer I know nation wide for pups. What town are you near, I might know some folks you can get some from.
