Has anyone hunted the Pierre area? Curious don't hear much about it on here, I might have a lead on hunting around there on private ground. Doesn't look like there is much public there though. Thanks-

I would consider Pierre to be one of SD's more popular destinations for upland hunting, particularly as guys with trailers full of pointers get excited about shooting spring of the year grouse. The National Grasslands hold birds, but get a ton of pressure. Much of the public land around Pierre is going to be more suitable for mule deer than pheasants. And there is a pretty significant amount of commercial hunting occurring in the area. BUT, I don't care where you go in SD, the public land will get hammered and, yet, there will be pheasants to chase. The pressure declines with the thermometer. The Pierre area would not be my first choice if I was choosing to hunting public in SD, but if you've got access to private ground out there, you should have a good hunt.

I hunted around Pierre last season, and again this season, all public. Didn't really hunt close to town, mostly 30 to 45 min away, to the north, northeast, and east. Pretty good numbers of birds last year, and this year there was a very noticeable jump in numbers.
Private land around there should be very good.
