Phillipsburg Area reports?

I will be heading to Kansas for my first time with a few friends and my two good furry four legged companions next Wednesday. We will be hunting from Thursday through Sunday. According to my friend who I am going with, the area we hunt is all private land from a farmer and that he has been hunting every year there for the last 5-6 years. I am going with the intentions of seeing this as a great opportunity for private hunting every year even if bird numbers are down. What is this area like and have any of you hunted this area with good success? I am excited regardless but would like to hear from you guys as to what it is like out there. Happy hunting.

Hunted opening weekend West of Phillipsburg. All private ground. Normally kill around 50 to 60 birds. Last year we killed 35. This year we killed 3. Only thing that changed was the bird population. Sorry for the bad news. Really sad. Hunted some good cover, just no birds.
 
Not looking good it seems like from the posts. I have been out a few times in CO and we have gotten a couple of birds. So I guess if we can do better than that it will be a success ;). It's still always fun getting the pups out and see what we can scrounge up:D. I will give some feedback after I get back. :cheers:
 
Gear is packed. Just bought my Non Resident license. Dogs are chomping at the bit. I have to work until 3pm today. On vacation after that :D and beer thirty...:beer: We leave tonight at 5pm traveling to the farm were staying at in Phillipsburg. I will report back how we did. I am bringing my Ipad to try and get pics. I will need to remind myself to take some pics.

Have a great time and enjoy the vacation! I am trying to decide to either head thataway on Mon. to try the walk in areas or the NE CO walk in. Any reports would be really cool!

I worked in Phillipsburg for a year, which was last year and I only saw 2 roosters, both of which ended up bouncing off my grille and front bumper. I stayed in the apts across from Willers and in the evening I could occasionally hear some cackling in the CRP directly north of town.....Numbers seemed down last year and I can only imagine that this year is worse. Good luck though

wow look who awoke from the dead i like when your around my friend it takes the heat off of me lol if you know what i mean lol give me a call some time we will go out and chase some skirts since your single show u how its done
 
Well got back Sunday. We only got 4 Roosters the whole time we were out there (3 days). We had some blockers that should of put at least 4 or 5 more in the bag. Shooting was the culprit there. The quail hunting was excellent!!! I enjoyed doing that as much as shooting pheasants. Seemed like every field we walked in there was a large covey of quail. we ended up with about 15 quail. I got my first Kansas rooster 15 mins into the first field. I did get an opportunity to shoot at about two more which were tough shots and that was it for me on roosters.

The conditions were brutal. It was really dry, dusty and the temps were in the 60s to low 70's :eek:. Dogs had an even harder time getting scent but worked really hard and found a few for us. My GSP was learning to quail hunt and he locked up a few coveys. It was awesome to see!!! It was like he grew up before my eyes :D. According to the farmer we stayed with, he said that this was a really bad year for him and the crops because of the drought. He farms mostly Milo and he got about half as much this year as last year. He said that one year in his fields 9 of them shot their limits by 11:30 AM. I can't wait until the conditons get good again for that to happen. Either way we had a blast. Can't wait to go back next year.

We did eat at Willer's and they had great food and service if anyone wants to know and are in that area.

Your problem with lack of pheasants is very evident from the picture you posted. Your lab is the wrong color! :D

Sounds like your trip wasn't a total bust though. :cheers:
