Pheasants near Johnson County?

Let me start by saying I am NOT looking for anyone's honey hole, just a starting point. I have been hunting Smith County for the last 6 years, but having recently moved to Johnson County, I would prefer not to drive 4 hours one way to hunt pheasants. I work around 12 hours a day and really need to maximize my time hunting, so I can spend the rest of the time with my two young boys, so I am looking for the closest (preferably 2 hours or less) area to hunt. Are there birds around Junction City? What about Lake Perry? Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated, I would gladly share information about Smith County if it would help you.

If you find any good bird numbers within 2 hrs. of Johnson County let me know. Cause I have been out a lot and what I have found is it is best to make the 3-5 hour journey to get into a good population of birds. Can you find some birds yes but very few. Hunted around Perry one day and walked all day to see just 2 birds out of range. That's when I decided better to drive an extra couple of hours and hunt less time then to hunt all day where there are such few birds.

That is what I figured, I just hate driving more than hunting. I guess I will try to start around Salina and move out from there.

Good luck to all,

Rut

You can always pay to go to a hunting preserve which is actually cheaper when you figure in gas. However, its not the same as the birds are pen raised. But on the plus side your out of the city and shooting birds for sure.

Preserve hunting is a good alternative to us that live in eastern KS.... It is not really that bad.... $150 for four birds... I usually make it an all day thing... Let the dogs work the birds...

Look at the regulations book that's free at walmart and it should have a map on it telling you how far you're going to have to drive to see some pheasants. But I will tell you their ain't jack squat around Johnson County. Just head west and not north or south in eastern Kansas. Good luck.

I have been to Eckmans a couple of times, and while it is a great club, it just isn't the same for me.
I used to live in Utah and I agree the 4.5 hour drive is much better than the 13 hour drive!:)

You will find more quail than roosters around Johnson County. There's some ok WIHA areas in Miami and Linn Counties. We have gotten in to some decent coveys at times. But. like everyone else has stated, head west about 2 to 3 hours and you will be alot better. Good Luck

The closest wild pheasants are in the counties along the Nebraska border north of Johnson Co. Whether there are "good numbers" -- well, probably not compared to Smith Co. Go scouting and try to get some private property permissions -- maybe offer to post their land if you can get them complaining about trespassers. Also, you might try a hunt club that may have leased land up there.

Good luck and good hunting.
