Pheasants in Vermont

It looks like I am the first poster here. I spent the past few days in Vermont and was really impressed by the habitat. The Champlain Valley with all of the fallow fields and cat tail sloughs looks like it would be a prime area for pheasant. However, I was told that there are no wild pheasants in Vermont. Does anyone know why? My only guess would be the heavy snowfalls are too much for them. Either that or a decent quality bird may have never been introduced. It seems to me that some trapped wild birds from the Midwest would survive and thrive in Vermont unless the snow is the problem.
