Pheasant Hunting "Tour"

If you had 7 - 10 days to go pheasant hunting, where would you go?

Thinking about taking some time off in the fall, and need some ideas. Most likely late November - early December.

It might end up so that I would take a few 4 day weekends, or something like that.

I have taken several trips to South Dakota for Pheasant and have been very satisfied with the time spent their. As for your question i guess the first ting you should ask yourself is what do you wnat to hunt? this alone will help you find an area to hunt, determined on the species your after. If it is a mixed bag and you want to hunt them in one location then alittle research and pick a spot if you wnat to break up your trip into several premium location for specific birds then you'll be traveling to several states seeing and experiencing many different sites. South Dakota has a good mix of birds and good numbers but Nebraska, Kansas, Montana, Texas, and even Colorado are all places i would consider just depending on what you want to hunt.

Hope this helps, I myself am trying to get a trip to South Dakota set up for Nov.

Good Luck

I will mostly be looking for pheasants ... maybe Huns. I have a friend with access to private land in Montana. I might start in Colorado > Montana > South Dakota > Nebraska > Colorado ... resting the boys (and me) on the drive to the next location. My wife and I haven't been on a "real" vacation in almost 8 years. It would be good to do something epic with her and the pups.

south dakota,i was there once about 7 yrs ago.there's a chance for huns and pheasants, also sharptail grouse, though i heard last year that the sharp tails #'s are down.I've been told theyre hard to work up with pointers, similar to prairie chickens. we saw a couple of bunches of sharp tails and from watching them ,that seemed to be true.
if you've never been, you wont believe it,though their #'s might be down lately

it was a 10 day license that you could use in 2 5 day pieces.some of those towns ,they rent houses(do your own cooking) by the week, which i think would be a good way and just plan on hunting for all 10 days, which would make a 12-13 day out a pocket adventure, transit etc.you would probaly have to pay a trespass fee,per day.others on the site may have more recent details

Sounds like you picked the right states, but you're better off hunting October/early November in the Dakotas and Montana. Weather can get dicey in December. You might also check out Iowa. The best parts of Iowa aren't far from the best parts of SD. Their bird numbers are down, but they still have lots of birds by CO standards from what I've seen. I wouldn't worry too much about sharpies and huns that time of year. The time to hunt them is September, when they hold much tighter. You could maybe get some Huns to hold that late. No chance on sharpies.
