outlook

How is the outlook for pheasant hunting in the Scott city area for next season? I'm looking at possibly going to Wild Wings Hunting if the outlook is good. Thanks ahead of time for the info.......Phil

If you are going for the controlled hunt you will be o.k. Wild roosters may be a different story!!! The jury is still out until crops ( if there are any ) start coming out this fall!!! Some good carry over birds and if they can manage a good hatch there will be a heck of a lot less habitat for them to hide and outsmart us!! Drought has hit pretty hard so it will be a wait and see at best!!!

I'm open for any suggestions on where to look. I was looking at wild wings in Scott City,Kansas.Right now I've been looking at A.J. Acres near Aberdeen.S.D. to find a smaller hunting lodge to stay at and keep cost down too. Thanks Phil V.

I know of a good pay to hunt operation in SD, near Clark. No lodging is included or anything, simply pay your trespass fee and shoot until you're out of shells or you have your limit. PM me if you're interested.

Looks even worse in person. Based on what we've seen over the last 60 days, it's going to be even worse than in 2001.

Ellis, Graham, and Trego counties now added to the list of emergency grazing for CRP.

This week (technically yesterday) is the mathematical peak of the pheasant hatch (think bell shaped curve). With no cover, no bugs, and triple digit heat; those little buggers are going to have a tough way to go.

Even if rain comes now....it's too late for most areas. It would help those chicks that make it though the first day of life. Many chicks will overheat and die just getting out of the egg (saw a nest of those yesterday).

dry land sorghum will likely not be a go either, in those dry areas they will be lucky to have enough moisture to drill wheat again next fall.....only irrigated areas will hold any number of birds.......i remember a summer like this years ago when i lived in western NE, it took a couple of years to reset the population.

Wouldn't recommend coming to SW Kansas this fall. Farmers are starting to graze CRP there will be little if any cover for chick survival. Even grassy corners on irrigated circles are extremely thin.

Thanks for the input everyone. Ran into some unexpected bills. Had some mechanical break downs with a tractor and two lawnmowers, all broke down this week. So I'll have to put off coming out your way for phez hunting this year......Phil V.
