One bird can make a difference in a day...

Hunted a pretty big private piece today in the Bremer/Chickasaw area I've hunted for years... saw 3 hens & 2 roosters... sad, but that makes for a pretty good walk now days. I walked another nice water way after and saw zero birds. First rooster flushed on the other side of the creek bank after I kicked up the hen that sat nicely for us. I did get a shot off through a bunch of garbage and didn't shake him, so we let him fly. About 10 minutes later she worked this guy in the pic who we dropped just over the creek. As I mentioned in other posts, I haven't hunted since my GSP's first & second year (she's 6 1/2) and don't think I had her on birds that year more than a hand full of times at most (sad I know). So she's still a pup in the field... but I'm happy with the way things are going. She's exceeding my expectations already and most importantly checking back regularly to see where the guy that feeds her is, then working back as needed. It just amazes me (with any breed) at the natural ability they have. :) At this point, my goals are simple and that's just trying to find anything for her to work on. Next year I should be able to get back to my old habits and get back in the field much more. I've never run 2 pooches before, but I'm in the process of working on getting a 2nd one... should be able to cover more ground and my kids will have a 2nd lapdog in the house... :) A SD trip will be in the plans at least once or twice next year now too...

Good luck guys in this last week! I'll be out once or twice more as well.

Nice long tail on that rooster!!! Good luck with dig # 2.

Nice job Shawk!:)

Here is to hoping you and your dog(s) get out more. Your dog in the photo deserves to spend more time in the field.

I don't recall your number of children but hopefully there is enough from rooster one to go around!:D

Thanks Skeet.... there's no question this wasn't the first escape for the other one that got away... he was a beautiful bird... this was a pretty nice bird to though... 22" tail. I think I've forgotten how smart these birds are. My dog was on the trail of another one again today that we never saw... just flat out lost it. That'll happen less and less. I'm assuming it was another sneaky rooster. She's learning quick though... I'm relearning with her!

KB... Ha! 3 kids, but we officially have shot enough for a meal. ;) These dogs do deserve more field time and mine will get it. She's an incredible pet and is far from neglected but the field is where they shine!
