Nine pointer and birds!

Was fortunate to bag a nine pointer around 8:30 this morning in northwest Iowa. Decided to try something that I rarely do anymore. Hunt without my dog. Did I mention it was 14 below this morning when I ventured out. Thank you lord that there was no wind.:p

I went back to the windbreak "honey hole" that I stumbled upon last year by Spirit Lake. With the lack of snow I was hoping the bitter cold would offset that and drive the birds to thicker cover. I was right!:)

I do not have the usual story simply because today was a matter of just being out there. The windbreak birds were holding tight and I managed three in about 75 yards of walking. These were mid hatch birds in amazing condition. Body fat appears to be very adequate.

I don't know if you can tell from the pics but these birds were frozen. I took the picture on the backside of a corn crib just to avoid the "whisp" of wind which made things unbearable today. The new Maxus and I are getting along very well!

I will post pictures of the nine pointer soon. He is also frozen now!:)

Hope to get back out this coming week. Let's hope this incoming snow storm is not serious. We could really use two mild ones in a row.

Nicely done Kbell!
Looks like it shoulld just be a fluffy snow.

Thanks reddog,

I don't enjoy hunting as much without my dog but when in Rome. . . .

Heading back to Bancroft area this week as I saw many birds there last outing.

I have fond memories of grove hunts from the past. Many birds in a short period of time equals fun!:)

very nice buck there KBELL!!! did you say you bagged him still hunting??? or hunting like you would pheasants??? that a boy my fav method for deer hunting is still hunting or sneaking around & taking deer on foot... talk about exciting!!!

can not stand sit n all day & freeze n in a stand not my thing lol... or deer drives/pushes thats just shooting deer... it does get the job done but not the same as still hunting or stalking up on a deer & actually hunting that 1 animal...

congrats again & good luck on your future hunts...

Hello SMO,

I hunt deer just like pheasants minus the dog. I recall two standing shots--deer stood and looked at me in all of my years doing this. Usually a jump and run shot from close range as this guy was!:) He had a smaller eight point with him. I was impressed that I hit him two of the three shots I took. He appeared to be a 4 to 4 1/2 year old buck. Don't know what happened on that last one. Had 84 pounds for the locker. I can taste the jerky, sticks and sausage already.:D

Thank you for the sentiments. This is my favorite way to hunt deer. When I was younger I party hunted and was a sitter some of the time. I don't miss it or the safety issues. It would have been difficult to sit in the temperatures that I was faced with on the weekend.

i agree safety issues took that style of hunting out of the picture for me... pushes that is... & like i said its kinda like a shoot VS hunt...

i jumped 2-3 nice bucks this season while out pheasant & or prairie grouse hunting 2 stopped & looked back at me in shotgun range the 3rd was out in pheasant country wear deer drives are common he beat cheeks as soon as i busted him out of his bed but he would of been in range for all 3 shots from my plugged shotgun...

its a habit for me to start to whistle or try to stop the deer with bleats maid from my mouth or lips squeeks ETC. it works alot & gave me many a standing shots at jumped bucks...

again congrats & glad you got a pic of that bad boy B4 you continued to skin him out...
