I was able to get out yesterday afternoon for the last 30 minutes before sunset. I've been watching my hunting spots pretty closely to see how harvest was going, and finally I found a nice field where the adjacent corn had been picked recently.
Bandit and I started walking the edges and he almost immediately got on scent. We tracked the bird for over 1/4 mile before it flushed 10 yards in front of me. Nice, easy crossing shot. I literally shot the bird's head off its body. I probably should have been more patient
With one bird in the bag we went back to working the edges of the corn. Bandit caught scent again and tracked this bird halfway to Texas. I'm not kidding, we followed that damn scent trail for almost 15 minutes!
Unfortunately, when the bird finally got up, it flushed low so I had to hold my shot.
By this time, shooting hours were over. I unloaded my gun and headed back to the car. I had to call him off scent several times.
Not bad for a half hour in a heavily-used patch of CRP!
Gentlemen, the corn is finally being harvested. I think we're in for some phenomenal late-season hunting.
