New to WI/Pheasants

Figured this is as good a place as any to introduce myself.

Recently moved to WI, went to college here, but didn't hunt pheasants then. I have a 20 month old DD who I'm trying to get into as many birds as possible this season.

In the Milwaukee area so pressure and crowds seems to be the name of the game. I have a decent handle in Jackson as I waterfowl hunted there some, seems every time I go there is a large number of vehicles. Spent most of Saturday I'm Sheyboygan county trying spots with no luck, not even a bird moved. Is there certain areas I should key on? I've pheasant hunted last year in IL, but that was more about exposure for the dog. Down there you have to pay to play with the state and your birds are often found within 200 yards of the truck.

At any rate, any tips or advice is appreciated. Additionally, I'm always up for meeting new folks and letting the dog work. Happy to meet up for a hunt.

I'll have to look into some places further west, thanks for the input.

This is from training this spring at a place near where I used to live in St. Louis. Pardon the former munitions bunker in the background.

Hard to tell she's not slick unless you see her in person... or she has ice forming on her furnishing like on this late season duck hunt last year.

I'd say head west and get away from the big cities.

I agree. I tried Bong this past Sunday morning. It was a zoo. Talked to two guys in the field that said they were the last vehicle that was let in, they had maxxed out and turned people away. I drive past Tichigan wildlife area on the way to Bong, there were 8 trucks/cars in that little parking lot on 83.

Welcome to the board. Good looking dog you've got.

Thanks for the compliments, she's my first trained hunting dog and I've really fallen in love with the dog training/hunting thing. I have two GSPs as well, but they're coach potato's. Fiance had them well before we met.

I don't hunt near as much during the week as I'd like, but I plan on hunting this Friday morning until about 830-9 and coming into work a bit late. Having just moved and started a new job I can't flex my time as much. I'm also planning on spending the majority of Saturday out as well.

Who's the DD from? I have 3....:)Wisconsin is not a Phez state.used to be able to shoot some wild birds.I would start grouse/woodcock hunting.I think ya have to head out towards janesville to get rid of the crowds. After duck hunting this Sat.Drove around looking for some phez cover(jefferson co)..No cover.
Stopped at Jefferson marsh,a sea of blaze orange !

Yeah, I hear all the time that Rock county is full of wild birds if you're willing to work for them. ;)

That would bother me if I actually hunted Rock county for pheasants.

Again it says more about you then me....

But guys like you are why I hesitate to send a pm with my phone number to Deuce and helping him out.

Definitely looking to get into grouse and woodcock, wanted to take a trip up north this year but finances haven't allowed for it. Hoping to catch the woodcock flight as it moves south. At least hunting the managed lands is more hunting than in IL where they put the birds out 30 min before you can hunt. I like having to work for them a bit.

She's a B litter pup from vom Brieftrager. She's been great for me. VJP 62, NAVHDA NA 112, and HZP 178. Starting to train for UT and VGP this spring for fall tests.
