I live in Morris and have been a long time duck hunter along the TX gulf coast and Oakwood Bottoms (Grand Tower, IL) but have taken to pheasant hunting. So far just been hunting a local club and my old dog (11 year old chessie) is a natural and this year she is doing great. I'm working on finding private ground to hunt but the pheasant apparently aren't what they used to be. I will probably be getting another Chessie April 2012 or so.

I have a pretty good thing going with some of my golf buddies as I have a dog that puts everyone on birds. The dog and I hunt alone most of the time and I have problems getting the guys that hunt with me to stay with the dog - if anyone has a tip about hunting multiple guys with a single dog please forward that information.

Your just need another dog!!

That's it... more dogs for you friends. Seriously I am too new at this to give any advice that's for sure. I had 1 dog for 4 guys a couple weeks ago and I wont kid you it was tough. Let's just say the dog was tired when it was over.

Oakwood Bottoms (Turkey Bayou) is where I used to duck hunt with my chessie before moving to the quadcities.

Welcome Aboard MM

I guess my first question would be, what type of cover are you hunting? Fields, ditches, or fence rows.

4 guys hunting with 1 dog isn't a bad thing at all, just don't expect your dog to find every bird with that many guys walking. Especially if you are in a field scenario. With that many hunters, the walkers are going to bump into some birds. Also, very important that you all stay in a straight line for safety purposes. If you have one or 2 guys lagging behind, it can be dangerous, especially if you are hunting at a club since some of these birds can be poor flyers.

I run pointing dogs, which is a little easier to manage with multiple guys since you can take turns shooting if the dog points them. You just have to be more careful with the flushing dog, and it's better to go slower than fast with 4 guys and 1 dog. Good Luck.

When I hunt with others that do not have a dog, they need to hunt alone: the dog stays basically in front of me - he's a retriever and doesn't range very far, perhaps 20-30 yards left and right. I'm the one to control the dog, not my friends.

Perhaps an older slower dog can pad along in front of others. That has not been my experience.

Hope this helps.

It's all prairie like fields with lots of tall grass. I have a lot of problems keeping the guys beside the dog and they randomly wander around. The guys all seem to be very safety oriented, I just need to keep them staying up with the dog.

Welcome!

You are the person that knows your dog the best and you should instruct others hunting with you where they need to position in order for everyone to be comfortable! I would have a discussion with your friends on where you want them to be and how you want them to work the cover!

Enjoy the forum!
