Hey everyone,

Long story short, I got a vizsla and after watching it grow and develop it's hunting skills on his own, I have decided to hunt with him. I have never hunted before nor trained a dog to hunt. Him and I are working on the training and it's going very well. Working on the "whoa" right now, hopefully we will be ready for quail season.

Anyways, since I have never hunted nor has anyone in my family....I need some help.

I grew up in Michigan and have lived in Wheaton, IL for about a year now.

I need some help with where to hunt? I mainly want to hunt quail and pheasants. I have applied for the FOID card and am sending the application in tomorrow, but do I need to do anything else?

I am 23 years old, do I need to take a class of some sort? Should I maybe try shooting some clays/trap?

The quail season starts when? I think I saw November does that sound right?

Where are good places to hunt near Wheaton, IL?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Nick

Nick, first of all welcome to uph. You have come to the right place for advise, lots of great advice here on this forum.

I am not from ill, so i cant help you with your states requirements. however, You can find this information on line with your state game and fish or dnr. Imo you should take a hunters safety course, even if your state doesnt require it, hunting safely is important.

yes, shooting clays will help with shooting skills, not mention getting to know your gun.

if i where you, i would post an introduction post,in the intoduction sec,of the main forums, b/c this time of year most,of the states forums are slow. I am sure that you will get more advise, from others,on this site. hope this helps, and once agian welcome to uph and hunting. better watch out it is addictive:thumbsup:

Welcome to the site. I'm pretty sure it is federally required that you take a Hunter's Safety Course or Hunter's Ed course. I know Iowa requires it no matter where you're from and I believe a few others do too.
