Hi,
Just moved to CO from AK. I want to come over to the NW KS area to hunt some pheasants. Don't know anything about the region. I could use some advice where to hunt. I want to come maybe next week.
If someone wants to hunt with me that would be great.

The Western part of Kansas is all pretty good, Northwest and Southwest are usually the best but can differ a little year to year based on moisture. Get a Kansas walk-in hunting map which list all the public land. There's plenty to choose from in Western Kansas. You'll probably find someone from this forum that'll take you out if you desire. Welcome and enjoy our state.

One Million Acres of Walk-In Hunting in Kansas

Go to the the KDWP website and download some walk-in hunting maps for NW KS. GPS coordinates are available too. The various maps are arbitrary rectangles covering parts of several counties. It's much easier to navigate from spot to spot with the maps if you cut and scotch tape together county by county maps. Thin black lines indicate section lines; heavy black lines section roads.

NW KS has been good this year, but it is late season now and the pheasants are pretty jumpy. I would seek out-of-the-way places. Some on this site have used Google Earth and the KDWP GPS walk-in coordinates to find good spots that can't be seen from the road. A great looking draw running from the road through stalks or stubble is likely to be birdless -- too easily accessed and hunted out.

There are fair quail numbers in NW KS this year. Unlike pheasants, they always hold and stick to their habitats.

Have a great hunt!

AK

I live in AK part of the year, mostly during my guiding season. Lived in many places but I have a place in Delta Junctin near Fairbanks. My kids live there. I am sick of cold and dark winters, so I moved here and bought a place. Now I need to get out and kill some pheasants.:)

My brother wanted me to come an moose hunt with him this year, but I didn't make it. I believe he hunted east of Cantwell, some where off the Denali Highway. Brother didn't get a moose, but his son did.

I hunted black bear with my brother in the Spring of 2009 on Kuiu.

So your brother lives in AK? The area east of CAntwell is not a good moose area anymore. Used to be until we elected a moron democrat for governor and he eliminated predator control. Now we have lots of wolves and not many moose in that area. But it is finally coming back. You should also know that area 13 is not generally open to NR, altho I think they are giving out a few permits by drawing. Probably good thing you didn't go..,.
