New Guy from South Texas

Hello everyone. I thought I'd add this intro here as this is where I've been lurking.

I found this forum while looking for information on Kansas pheasant hunting. I have been reading all the information on the forum & enjoy & appreciate all that I've read. I thought I would join & add my recent Kansas experience & hope to contribute in the future.

I have been bird hunting (dove, duck, geese, & quail) in south Texas since I was a teen. Now married, two kids & work keeps me busier than I would like but I still get out as much as I can.

Now for the fun... I am fortunate enough to have a father-in-law that I genuinely enjoy spending time with & he and his brother own farm land in NW Kansas. It had been about 7 yrs. since he had been up to Kansas & I had never been, so we decided it was time to check out. We planned for the pheasant opener & I started reading everything I could find about Kansas pheasants. This was going to be my first pheasant hunt & I tried to learn as much as I could. My father, my father-in-law, his brother, the brother's two sons & I made the trip from south Texas. We hunted the opener & a couple of days after. We shot a few birds & had a great time together, but I will say that we needed a dog. The cover was good enough that birds were in the field & we never saw them, just heard them. It was a good experience & I'm looking forward to trying it again next year.

Here is my first pheasant...

Very nice, if you don't have a dog I would suggest walking in a zig zag pattern toward each other in the thick stuff ( always keeping in mind that a low bird is no bird) . That is great that your able to get up there and enjoy a hunt with family.

yeh, what he said. add stopping from time to time. roosters get skidish when it gets guiet.

Your first pheasant is enough to justify a dog. Pointing breed or retrieving breed? I'll vote for a German Shorthair ;)

Welcome

Thanks for the replies. My sister has a lab that they hunt dove and ducks with, so I'd like to be able to hunt with her some & talk her into a return trip to let her experience Kansas. Yeah Rusty, it's something that could easily become addicting. Adding a dog would just add to the beauty of it all.

I'm glad you enjoyed your trip. The opener in NW was tough due to the extremely dry and warm conditions. A dog helps and makes it more fun. If you return after a snow, you'll be delighted - if you have a dog to find them - by the shots off points.
