Need A Little help

Hi All,

Moved to Wichita last year and after looking all over, took my son out to Eldorado and to Cheney Resevors as well as some walk in areas. After hunting for about 4 days in various locations, we saw a grand total of about 30 medowlarks, found a very nice deer antler, but not a single phesent or quail. We went out late in the season so I expected it to be slower, but is this the norm? I heard that Kansas ranks 3rd for Pheasant, but it seems to be the west part of the state where it's all guided hunts. Anyone have any advice?

West KS is not all guided hunting. There are some great WIHA opportunites out there. The area that you mentioned hunting hasn't had any glowing reports from KDWP or other hunters on either of the 2 pheasant hunting forums I frequent. I'd head west and find a WIHA map. Perhaps even NC; there are plenty of birds out there. If you want more specific details on a couple of good WIHA spots, I'll share a couple that aren't too far from you, just send a pm.

Have found good bird numbers in the Ellsworth County(Kanopolis Wildlife Area). The further North and West the better off you'll be..Or even South West. The South East region of Kansas never has had many pheasant..good luck.

Good advice

That is, to the best of my knowledge, good advice Oggie! It will take a longer drive west to find birds. Go to the KDWP website around June of next year and register for the special youth hunt drawings. They provide good opportunities for hunters who may be limited in terms of scouting time.

Hunting in Kansas

The best and cheapest way to hunt birds in Kansas is to get the KDWP's walk-in hunting atlas. Kansas has 1.1 million acres enrolled in the walk-in program. Some counties in prime pheasant country have over 40,000 acres in walk-in. The Wichita area is not prime pheasant country. Look to north central and northwest Kansas. Happy hunting to you and your family.
