NE Kansas Hunting

I know it's not the most ideal place to pheasant or quail hunt, but I'm really hoping to get out with my dog even if it means walking all day even for him to just smell a single quail or pheasant.

Does anyone have recommendations or possibly want to tag along Saturday or Sunday?

I'm in Kansas City and trying to keep the drive under 2 hours for right now.

We just got back from pheasant hunting in SD that was great, but my pup ended up not being able to hunt. The snow was messing with his right paw and he couldn't walk.

I've been using the WIHA for research but any other info would be extremely helpful!

Thanks,
Kris

N E Kansas is tough with lots of lossed CRP , if you were hunting D-7 or D-8s and backhoes you would be in luck .

Pheasants forever Just listed this area as one top 20 areas in the nation that are in need of habitat restoration .

I Will Pm you with a couple suggestions .

I will be hunting in Northeast tomorrow, checking a few new counties off my "hunt every county in Kansas before I die" list.

Anybody have any advice on loads/chokes for a double trigger SxS? I'll be in the Seneca area, so I anticipate more quail than pheasant but would like to be able to be lucky...

I run a sxs DT Dickinson ic and Mod , I hunt some CRP that still has a few pheasants , I often run a load of nickel plated 7's and 5's in my 20 ga

Didn't see a bird in NC/NE KS this weekend and dodged loads of deer hunters...did you have any luck?

We did get into a few pheasants 2 coveys and a decent buck . See my post under birds , bucks and Briitanies in pheasant hunting forum .

Back in the day Seneca area held quite a few birds. Certainly not ever a phez hunting destination but the motels always seemed to have hunters staying at them opening weekend. Should say the couple of motels. As high school kids we used to go there opening weekend and we would stay at a motel up there. Always shot a few birds.

I ended up staying on the MO side, noticed my license from last year was still good.

Ended up getting into a covey and the dog got about four others up.

When I was in college in the late 80's we had some incredible hunts around Hiawatha to Seneca. Knocked on doors and got permission from three or four farmers (ah the good ol' days). Did great on pheasant and quail. Then Mid America Gamebird Association formed and leased up all the land. Haven't been back to that area since.

I hunted just a couple hours around Centralia. Wind and temps were unfavorable, and the cover was pretty sad. Much of it looks like a moonscape. I didn't hunt very hard, though, and took some time out trying to chase down a duck stamp/steel shells after seeing a lot of waterfowl sitting on ponds, but came up totally skunked. 2nd hunt I have not seen birds this year (previous was on beautiful pheasant ground near Beloit).

Yes cover all around that area is horrible with much more being lost to dozers! Same just west of my house. Nice pasture land that once supported several nice flocks of chickens but has been put under the plow, draws dozed in and crops planted without even a fence row between them! Still is one nice sized flock of chickens that manages to hang on in on of the few pastures left.

In the early 90s I hunted a big pond in that area and lots of chickens would come over the blind to feed in the corn and bean fields behind the blind. I'd always shoot 3-4 chickens a year but mostly just enjoyed watching them.

Went out last Saturday to Osage county. Was there for three hours and seen three birds flush out at the same time. Didn't get anything, but it was great getting out. Growing up i would see coveys here and there. Its a whole lot different now a days!

Hopefully we have different results. We've got a day trip planned new years day for that area.

I have hunted this area for the last 15 years it accounts for some of the best quail hunting I have access to . We often move 4 to 7 coveys a day . I have shot limits on a number of outings but for me it's more important to get the Britts into birds and watch good dog work .

I'll second Brittman's reply. Every year I get invited on a hunt down there as a friend owns about 300 acres. We usually move 5-7 coveys by noon.
