Here are pics of my new yellow lab male pup. His dad is a GMPR, QAA, MH, HRCH. His registered name will be P4PLabs Remingtons Sure Shot. He was 9wks old on 29 July. He might not be ready for roosters this fall, however he might be come January and definitely next fall.

I have two other labs, 7yr old chocolate female and 1 1/2yrd old yellow female for this fall. My old 14yr old male won't be able to get out this year. I needed to get another male.

I just love lab puppies!!:);)

 Love those yellow eyed fools too!

Good-looking little guy. Watch out if he grows into those big feet . . . congrats!

Congrats on the new edition to the huntin' family!!

Thanks guys....he is something else. Now I will admit, being an "old" school guy, I always said that if I wanted my lab to point I would buy a pointer. However, I couldn't pass up a pup from this litter. He has an excellent mix of FT, HT and GMPR. So with that, anyone out there experienced with pointing labs? If so, how should I encourage and/or train for it?

Just so y'all know, I have been training, raising, hunting, campaigning, breeding labs since 1992. I have trained myself and ran myself labs all the way up to the Master level and QAA, however I do not know diddly about pointing training.

Since retrievers by design are flushers, if you have one from a line of pointing labs, what should I do to get him started early to entice the pointing?

Thanks,
Greg

Pointing Lab tips

Be prepared to buy a lot of birds and watch them fly off into the sunset. Mine is almost 2 now and points rock hard but it wasn't always like that. Also don't dizzy your planted birds too much, when they catch em it will set you back a couple birds. If you have a chance to learn about a whoa program I would recommend following that as well. What a treat these dogs are. Slogging thru the marsh in the morning for ducks, into the pit for geese and then out for pheasants in the mid-morning and afternoon. I tell everyone he is only limited by my abilities.

Definitely get him out in January! Our Weim Blitz will be 1 year old mid August. I took him out the last weekend of pheasant season. He had a great time and it gave him exposure to new places, sights and sounds. I ran him with my blue Weim Dakota. Blitz ran around after Dakota, kept an eye on me, found some deer poop, some feathers and bones. It was a good time.

What a beautiful dog! I bought a lab pup in 1990 and took him to Canada to hunt sharptail in September when he was only 5 months old. All it took was our stumbling into the first flock, I shot a bird, he ran out and retrieved it, and after that he knew what we were looking for and he found more, had a great season back in Mn starting with ducks and then pheasants in October. Both of the labs we have now started pointing pheasants in their first year, although neither (full sisters, but separate breeding 3 1/2 years apart) were from a "pointing" line.
