I know I hunted the first 4 days and again on the 6th. Don't Believe I went out again till the 10th.Believe I missed 2 days the rest of the month. We got a couple inches of snow the night/morning of the 9th/10th and I have been happy ever since. Had that one disgusting day but even that would probably be a fair day for many hunters in other states.
The earlier season with warm temps and little or no snow made me realize how much I enjoy hunting pheasants in snow. The last day hunting the mother slough it was a blast having birds pointed that would come out in a shower of the white stuff. Knock a bird down and watch the dog burrow 6 feet under the cattails only to have the bird somehow pop out the other side with a dog chasing them.
Someone commented that they enjoy colder temps and having large numbers of birds flushing. Wild time for shooting if they are close enough. Picking out roosters from the hens and which rooster to shoot and marking them down. When we got our last 2 birds to limit out on the 31st I alone could have probably got 6 including a great opportunity to bag 2 in 1 shot. I will relive that moment in time for years to come.
I told the new hunter from Georgia this little slough is special for my friend , who owns it , because our first hunt out last season he went 3 for 3 on birds when we weren't 10 yards in. He couldn't believe he hit those birds and told me good shooting. I laughed and said i never raised my gun. He said I am done for the year as it has to be a let down from here.
