My dogs last trip

Hey guys, after 13 years of chasing birds with my best friend, it looks like next week may be the last road trip we take. I didn't get a chance to get to SD last year, ( new job, family stuff) but Im heading out Thursday morning about 4 and was going to head to Redfield, and hunt the Redfield Faulkton area. Im hunting alone on this trip, (girlfriend is going along to check it out and see the dog hunt) so Im going to be a little limited on areas, I cant run the big areas with her at that age, and was wondering how the ditch cover was in that area, or many smaller slough areas around, that would be a little easier for us to take on. Ive had few people tell me the numbers are ok in that area, not like a few years ago but ok. Any help at all would be very much appreciated. Yes I did the ok from my vet last Friday to hunt her ! She said it would be good for her to roll one more time . Merry Christmas !

Good luck to you. Hope your dog's final hunt is a memorable one. I'm sure it will be, regardless of whether or not you see birds.

X2, but I do hope you see some birds on your dog's final hunt!

I know we're not supposed to feed 'em "human food", but I'd sure as heck stop off and buy that dog a bacon cheeseburger on my way home:)

+1. During my first dog's last hunting season, I would make it a point to stop and buy her a cheeseburger every now and then. A special treat for a special friend. Good luck on your trip.

A buddy of mine used to stop and give his dog an Arby's sandwich until he barfed it all over his truck, LOL! Sound like maybe a dog biscuit or treat would be better! Anyway, reward him!

Well after all the hoops I had to jump through to get this trip to work out, I couldn't go. My g/f son had a Tonsillectomy the Friday before we were going to go, hes 17 been having problems being sick from it etc. They screwed the surgery up, and had to go in the next day at 5am. the recovery was and still is bad. They left part of his tonsil in. WTF !!!!!!!!! anyway, I thought since I couldn't go to SD , Id run down for a day trip to Ia on Friday , and if things were better the next day Id take her along for a day trip. to see the dog hunt. To make a VERY long story short, I couldn't get the license here in town ( they said the update from Iowa wasn't in the computer yet) I took off Fri Am and I was just going to pick a license up when I got down there. If you get a license after the 15 th of Dec its good til the rest of this year and all of next ( always been that way ) After going to 4 places and 20 min on the phone to the DNR ( thanks to the nice lady at Hy-Vee) GUESS WHAT , The change over on licenses doesn't take place anymore until Jan 1st, it would have cost me $127.00 to hunt Fri, and Sat if I decided to go back again. So to sum it all up F^$*$*@# and it doesn't look like we will get that last hunt after all. I hope you are all having a better season than me .

Maybe you can take the funds from the non-hunt and take her to a Bird Farm!
Enjoy the good time while you can.

I was going to to that, $500 membership 19.50 a bird OUCH, I still might do something like that though. Theres one 70 miles north of me that's no membership, I hate the whole idea of them , but for her I think that's what were going to do .

Yea, not real fond of the bird farms myself. But the cost of transportation and scareity of local wild birds means if I want to watch the dog work locally, it the only realy choice. Otherwise its just a walk in the fields.

And I'm sure you don't need me to say this but, this one is for her, not you.

I hope you make it out and have a great time. If i was closer (Indiana) I would offer to go and it would be my treat!

Yeah, this one is for Her. Get Her the Bacon Cheeseburger, have them hold the pickles, onions and mustard.

My pups get this stuff often, they LOVE it, barf, haven't seen it.

HAVE A GOOD ONE YOU TWO!!!

Just go to a hunting preserve in your state. You'll save money, easier for an old dog, and pretty much guaranteed to get your dog some birds.
