More CRP coming to KS

Will More CRP Lead to More WIHA?

The KDWP article reflects the relationship between CRP and WIHA. The expiration of CRP contracts led to the termination of some WIHA contracts. Hopefully, new CRP enrollees will grab the extra dollars per acres by enrolling their new CRP acreage in the WIHA program.

Hate to be the bearer of bad news but I think the 4.4 million acres is what is available for enrollment nationwide.

In order for Kansas to just replace the 900,000 acres lost over the last two years they would have to secure 20% of all available acreage. That will tough to do if the demand for available acreage is there from states like SD, ND, MT etc.

The unfortunate fact is that the cap on total nationwide acreage fell from 36 million acres to 32 million acres in the last farm bill. Most every pheasant state will see significant losses compared to what CRP was on the ground in years 2006-2008.

EDIT:

See link below for the reference to the 4.4 million acres needing replaced to reach the 32 million cap. Story also mentions an additional 14.2 million acres set to expire nationwide in years 2011-2013. Hope the FDA continues offering the General Sign Ups in coming years in order to at least keep us at the cap.

that's exactly why i say we (KS) better get going with a stamp fee and a payment structure to pay landowners additional fees to keep CRP acreage in the WIHA program! CRP is just plain going to diminish, along with the cover and habitat to keep the Kansas bird population viable...need to take action now and not when it is time to initiate a recovery plan! :(
call the KDWP and ask them what the plan is going forward?......surely they are thinking this through??

I'm a bone head:eek: I was at work when I found it and didn't take the time to double check what I was seeing. My apologies!

Not bone head at all and no apoligies needed. The comment from the KDWP guy was either a little mis-leading or they got the quote wrong. Easy to come to that conclusion based on the article alone.

Thanks. Yeah what makes it even easier is wanting to hear something like this someday!
