Almost that time of year! Reports are looking a little more optimistic and numbers seem to be climbing now that most of the state has been drug out of drought. We have been hunting WIHA in Mitchell CO for the last 15+ years last couple years have been really tough, miles and miles of walking for only a few birds. Anyone have any info/ report about this area of state?

That is where we will be ringn3ck. It is about same as last year. Spotty to good in spots. If you see a couple white ford f250s and a group of 8 people with 2 gsp and 2 vizsla make sure you say hi.

Will do bchunter. Not sure on how many guys we will have along this years. Guys started falling out of the group when the hunting started getting bad a couple years back. A few of us still brave the conditions, just to be out! A bad opening weekend is still better than a week at work!

Mitchell CO Update

Spotted at best in Michelle county. Hunted a small mix of private and public with not much luck. I was able to pull a limit of roosters on the last hunt of the weekend within the last 2 hours of light. Only places we could find birds was where no one else wanted to walk but that's how public hunting goes. A mixture of weather conditions and most crop was winter wheat a think hurting the birds around the lake. Dint really see many hunters, I think we need to move farther west. we had 12 people in our group with 6 dogs and maybe saw 40 birds, mostly hens. The 4 roosters I did harvest were all 3 year old birds as well.

We hunted around the lake as well. I was very disappointed with the pheasant numbers. Last year in a down year we got over 40. This year we got 3. We only saw 10 to 15 birds with a group of 12 people. Very disappointing. On a fantastic note we saw well over 100 in our hunting area on the south side of the lake. We quit pheasant hunting halfway through the day on saturday and concentrated on the quail. Overall gonna look for different areas to hunt this year

That time of year agian

That time of year again, time to start getting prepaid for the opener.

Will be heading back to Mitchell CO for the opener again for the 17th year. Been through ups and downs, hopefully the numbers are up this year and can get into some birds.

Our group has gotten a bit smaller this year with only 6-8 guys with a couple dogs.

Where is everyone else heading?

We are headed there as well. We are leaving wednesday to set up camp. Same tradition 30 years in a row. Birds or no birds we have a great time.

Absolutely! My dad took me to Glen Elder for the first time when I was 12 as another bird dog, didnt even carry a gun. Been back almost every year since! My father has passed away but I still go to the spot every year I shot my first bird be side him, over by fishermans bridge.

That is exactly how i started. I was one of the bird dogs. I even remember finding a rooster nesting in a clump of grass that they walked past and pointed it out to them lol. Made many great memories with my dad and uncles over the thirty plus years i have been going. This year will be bitter sweet for me with my dad passing away back in march. Opening morning will be pretty emotional for me without him around. Even being 41 years old now, itnis gonna be hard to fight back a tear or 2 on that first walk

I will be 2 hours west of you with my 81 year old dad and will be savioring every moment and story because it may be his last. Hope not but.......

Enjoy it turtle. You are exactly right, you never know when it will be the last opener. Over these lasts few weeks i have been reflecting on all the openers we went on together. I plan on using his shotgun this year during the opener just so there is a part of him out there.
