Met an Old Warrior/Pheasant Hunter

Stopped in Sidney for a bite on the way back from NV. Arrived at a downtown bar and grill at the same time an old timer did. We chatted. He's 81 and said his back was hurting because he got shot up flying in Vietnam and he'd been driving all day. He was in route to Pierre to meet and hunt the opener with someone he flew with in the war. Been going up there for years he said. Started his trip in Phoenix driving his '78 Ford pickup, taking it easy because he does not like to hurry and his pickup, he said, has a long stroke V-8 that is not made for high speed. He and his pickup were the essence of longevity and toughness. His still bright blue eyes were teary, from advanced years or remembering old friends and war, I do not know, maybe a little of each. His eyes had steel in them too. He was a Man with a capital M.

I ran across a similar gentleman in South Dakota hunting last year. our guide took us by there to help find sharp tails for us. When we pulled up, I was shocked anyone lived there but this guy was sharp as a tack. He had fought in world war 2. He was a really neat guy to talk to. Best I could tell he liked to live very simple and away from people but fun to talk to.
