Men's Trip

10 of us did our annual upland trip this past Friday - Sunday. We had a great time.

Some observations:

-Corn is coming down (we watched 2 combines take down 2 sections - the corn was holding 20 birds+)
-We hunted all private land in Holyoke and Wray
-We found a decent number of pheasants and a few coveys of quail (not close to the number of birds we witnessed last year at this time)
-Perhaps the warm weather had something to do with the reduced number of birds
-I thought the cover was thin compared to last year
-I shot horribly to start Friday....0 for 3 (all 3 were layups) but I eventually settled down - I kept one embarrassing miss in my video...I edited out the rest of the misses as well as some of the lucky shots
-I am struggling to shoot quail (1 for 8) - same story as last season

Echo has learned a ton over the last year. She is a great companion in the field. I trust her nose and her ability to find birds. Her speed and stamina are her greatest characteristics. Here is the link to the video:

BTW: Echo's breeder has puppies. Private message me if you want an introduction.

Echo is looking good....... especially around that barbwire! Good job.
My 4 year old lab would have ran into that wire two times after I whistled him off the first time.

Thanks Eddie. Echo is doing great. Love her prey drive. She is quartering back to me when the wind is at her back. It is obvious when she in on birds. I cannot ask for anything more. Cannot wait to hit the fields again!

Thanks - I have been working on a SIT command when she is near a barbed wire fence. I hope she learns how to move under the bottom wire without issue. I have video of her tracking a covey of quail on a fence line. It makes me nervous to see her so close to the fence. She ended up busting the covey and staying safe. I know it is a fine line between allowing her to hunt and keeping her protected. As you know, the dog`s adrenaline is hard to control.

Brittboy - Do you mean the video in this post or do you mean the other videos on my site? When we are training, we use chuckers (cheaper). We actually did see sharptails but not within shooting range. We moved a few coveys of quail but I missed some easy shots so I did not include the footage. I did take 1 but it was hard to see the quail.

If you are talking about the video in this post, my pictures of each day are at the end of the video. 3 roosters on day 1 (2 in Colorado, 1 in Nebraska), 1 rooster on day 2 + a quail (both in Nebraska), 3 roosters on day 3 (2 in Colorado and 1 in Nebraska). I have never witnessed a sage grouse in Colorado or Nebraska.

I frequent Quail Run but don't remember a video of a hen (just chuckers). If you're talking about the video that I posted (above), there were no wild hen pheasants killed. 7 roosters + 1 quail.

Great Video! Loved the dogs work and the unique shot angles you had. Nice!
Thanks man. The over the head opportunities were cool. The GoPro has its limitations so I like it when the birds get close. Echo continues to get better. She can find birds and can get them. She will chase a running bird. Not sure that is a bad thing as long as it is within 30y of me.
