Maybe the last perfect day of the season...

It was in the low 40's, sunny, light wind, no other humans to be seen. I took the shotgun for a walk with no expectations.

Nice job guys! I hope youre wrong and the best day (with a little snow) is still ahead! Im debating about this weekend - hunting with a large Golden the opening weekend of deer season.....

Good job guys!! Yesterday was really nice, I would have loved to been in the field.

X2.

I woke up with a horrible head cold and decided to stay home. Going to brave the elements tomorrow I think. Gotta get my leaves cleaned up today Lol!

I believe Cabelas in Hoffman Estates has vests in stock. That may give you a peace-of-mind while in the field during deer season.

Oh I have orange for the mutts- its more a concern of guys just being ticked off at me while theyre hunting deer. Im probably making too big of a deal out of it.

Dunno UH...the randomness of opening weekend deer season can not really be measured. You don't really have any idea of who is where, doing what, and with what experience and self-control. I don't know where you would be going, but "those" people scare me--what is a "accident" for them could be a life-altering event for me.

I don't even want to think of my reaction if someone shot my dog.

Opening week-end, I hunt deer on a property which serves as a passage way from one woods-land to another. I've never gotten a deer on it on opening week-end. I don't expect to. But I got all week to hunt.

Realistically, I'm a pheasant hunter; deer hunting is venison shopping for me.

Be safe, have fun.

I agree. I hunt Goldens during the gun season and have never had an sort of an issue. That said, both have bright orange collars and never work very far out in front of me.

I've actually had some deer hunters wave/thumbs up me when pheasant hunting. If I see them off in the distance, I may work the dogs into a piece of cover that would push any deer in it to the waiting deer hunter. As long as you don't get too close to them, I don't think most guys mind very much.

Well I managed to sneak out today on what will be my last nice day by the looks of it.

Dog wasn't very happy as these two were bagged in about 10 minutes. Finally found some birds in one of my favorite spots! Now bring on the cold and snow! I shot the second one pretty poorly but the dog did a great job of sticking with it and pinning it down.

Nice job Holy Moses. Nice picture with your pup. Congrats on a good day in the field.

Thanks.

It was pretty crazy. Literally released the dog and he was on point with a couple minutes. After bringing the first one to me, he was off again and he hit the brakes about 40 yards away. Wish I wouldn't have been alone so I could have let him work the whole field.

Way to go on the birds HM.

Today was pretty nice out too. Even the duck was a good solid point today. It was wounded in some cattails and half flew/swam away I swatted it down and Willy took to the water after her. She of course dove but he was able to put his head under and bring her up.

Cool pose on the birds wisturkey. I like it. Four nice leg/thighs.....time for a batch of soup!

This is the meat from the last 4 birds shredded up with some bell peppers and onions ready to become pheasant salad for deer camp. I make a red wine vinegar/ stone ground mustard dressing I mix in. I eat pheasant just about every day this time of year it seems.

That looks very good! how do you serve it? As a side on the plate, on crackers, or? Do you add any mayo or miracle whip?

Wife and I had pheasant fettuccine Alfredo tonight from the two birds i got sunday. When she asks for a second helping, you know it's good. That is one if my favorite and easiest ways to make a tasty pheasant dish.

Crackers, bread, or over pasta. It's just a good thing to have sitting in the middle of the table during a game of euchre right next to the 30 pack of pbr!

I don't add mayo with this vinaigrette version but I've had it with mayo and it was good.

My number one way of eating pheasants is to saute shrooms with garlic, brown in some diced up breast, and then add heavy cream. Let it thicken up and poor it over pasta. Sometimes add tomato paste and it's pretty frikk'n good.

Dude, both sound excellent. Thanks for the info, I'm going to give both a try this winter.
